It's 2013 and there are still people here that think Steam is some vile monster that lives under their bed, ready to pounce?
Poll results are rather interesting, would be nice to see what the results would be three years ago.
Just shows how all this Steam hate is mostly pointless whining.IMO, There isn't a single problem with it except requiring internet connection. I'm actually glad ETW was Steam only, otherwise I'd probably never have heard of it.
Steam version
Steam is great now I have fibre optic 100mb internet, I get game updates and whole games in the click of a button and they're on my PC and being played within half an hour.
That said I remember when I had 100kbs download speeds, and it wasn't so much fun then. But really the answer is as it was for me, pay for a better internet connection..
This is my problem, and the problem of most people who dislike or distrust Steam. I don't hate Steam because I want to pirate games, I hate it because it is mandatory and for someone like me who has a terribly slow internet connection Steam can be a nightmare when you first install a game or want to download updates.
I'm sure if I had fibre optic internet I'd like Steam too, but living in a rural backwater I don't and therefore it's a pain.
Don't people realize you can usually buy boxed versions of Steam games on Amazon and that there's a trick to always making them install from a disc so it doesn't take forever to install?
Retail with activation via Steam.

Some years ago i was a Steam hatter too (i thought of it as a program whose only reason to be was to deplete your bank account and be an intrusive software in look for pirate games and maybe personal information).
But know, i have to say that i'm completelly in love with it. Amazing sales (for instance, i have got 2 of the probably 3 best strategy games ever for 1 € each (Company of Heroes and Rome Total War) which is just ridiculous... for newer titles... i got Shogun 2 for 12 € quite close to its release date), easy to use, saves disk space (you can download your games at any time), there is no risk of your cds getting scratched (since there are no cds at all), there is a great community system to let you play with your friends...
And if there is any pirate around... i'm pretty sure that with these ridiculous prices, fast downloads and automated installs and updates... it's not even worth for them to waste time and sweat trying to pirate games (which in any case are known to be a lot more glitchy and rarely let you play online).
I honestly think Valve has hit the problem spot on.
The only thing i miss is the joy of actually getting your beautiful box and reading your full-coloured thick game manual, but honestly, i don't think that the straightforwardness steam offers is worth that romanticism (specially since probably you would only see the manual for 5 minutes and not open it again in your life... google is way easier to use and also it gets updated info).
In any case i guess they should give the option to buy a steamless copy of the game for those who require it, but i would tell them to actually give Steam a try because it is a wonderful software.
If you need anything new to hate, i suggest that you give a look to EA's Origin =)
I can deal with the frakkin middle-man. Just give me the freakin' box.

Already confirmed only steam
The only thing to remember is that it should not be compulsory...
No-one listens to the op who stated "refrain from commenting"?
How hard is this to do? Really?
Voted non steam.
Sorry Steam Fan Bunnies,
Main reason's poor broad band connection and No I cannot get it upgraded. Live in a rural area.
Also looking through the teq threads From ETW to Shogun it seems a lot of people have hassle with this system.
I think Lesta T, hit the nail on the head, If steam must be used, only use it for registering the game and have a boxed version to play.

That's a bummer. I had it for several years and I can confirm (rural area here to): now is the internet ready for steam-downloading.
This year a company has given the entire municipality (?) fibreglass
I have no problems with steam, never had, except that it cost me a week before I had installed S2:TW. At that point, the first update was released, so it cost me two weeks before I could actually play the game.
And I miss the times that I and my brothers could play against each other on a single CD. I would like steam even more if they found a solution for this.
Like 1 full license and several limited, like LAN only, and/or singleplayer only.
