    Default Self-destructing CD's.

Has anyone ever had any problems with CD's self-destructing whilst in a CD-ROM drive?
I had a call from my girlfriend this morning, telling me that when she opened her CD drive tray, she found a shattered CD in there. Her PC had been left on all night, with the CD left in the drive, but no one had used it.

The only thing I could think of was that the laser thing had malfunctioned and somehow destroyed the CD.
I'm not very technically orientated, but I always thought that CD lasers were far too weak to do anything like that.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Ehh I don't think the laser could have done it. It may have spun too fast and got out of position then hit something and shattered. It's far more likely someone broke it and put it in there, or she's lying. I could form a better judgement if you sent me a picture.

    Cant get a picture, sorry.

    Hang on a second......
You've just made me realise that there is a good chance that it was actually one of my CD's, and now she's trying to cover her own arse by saying that "My computer broke it, not me!"

Im pretty sure its impossible for a CD to self destruct in a CD drive, if there was such a thing as a self destruct CD then it probably wouldnt shatter at all, but just rewrite all the data on it to nothing or something like that.

Yeah.. theres nothing worse than a lying woman... I wonder what else she's lying about. Dont worry about getting a new CD or CD drive, get a new g/f.

I don't know what might cause total shattering of the CD in the driver, but it's possible. I had a game called King of Dragon Pass and my driver caused a two centmeters crack in the outer ring.

Propably the CD was bad quality and when driver start to read CD, it heats up and driver might cause a crack to already heaten CD, especially if the driver is cheap version or it's the early DVD drivers.

I've had a CD shatter in a CDdrive. It was a well loved version of Hearts of Iron that had started to crack but still worked. Shattered on that intial whir after putting it in.

Had it happen to a copy of Baldurs Gate 2. There was a noise like the disc was spinning far too fast then a crack. The disc was in 3 pieces and so hot I dropped it.

The new CD-ROMs are very fast today. If the CD was old /cheap design it could have been too weak to sustain the centrifugal force of her CD-ROM.

Actually, I HAD a CD splatter in my drive. It ruined the drive, too, of course. I was playing, ad suddenly it made "BAM" and the drive stopped rotating the CD. I bought a new one, and never had that problem again.

Just don't leave your CD in your PC for too long.

What you will want to do now is open the drive.
Take it out of the case and lift the lid of, it will probably have screws.

Remove all fragments of CD with tweezers or something and check for damage to the drive.

When it spins too fast, the CD will shatter. Don't know what CD you have, but it may be made from cheap materials which helped contributed to this fact. Noticed that CD reading speeds haven't gone up in recent years? It's because higher speeds would basically make your CD drive like a bomb(it explodes). There was this website that had this info. awhile go, can't find it in my bookmarks.

They have tested this on Mythbusters and whilst there was as small chance your CD might break in the drive the chances very remote.

I've been using CD's for 15 years if not longer, and this has never happened to me.

I'm pretty sure that A: Her CD-Rom drive is old and/or cheap, and B: the CD was a cheap CD.
This leads me to conclude that, couple with the fact that it was left on all night, it overheated and shattered.

Mystery solved. Cheers for the info.

It happens, not very often, and is usually the result of a fatiuged disk, but it does happen from time to time. It was particularly bad on the 1st gen 40x MAX cd drives from about 6 or 7 years ago they would speed up and vibrate the cds.
