Default Matsudaira Katamori and the Tokugawa crest

Hi! I'd doing a small mod where I'm currently putting together an alternative Matsudaira Katamori for the FOTS campaign. I'm making him wear a jin baori but I'm divided whether or not I should make him wear the tokugawa crest on his back. So my question is, would it be historically correct for him to wear the tokugawa mon? Because if I've understod it correctly the Matsudaira family are distant relatives to the tokugawa and were entitled to wear the crest. And from another source I found out that the crest was worn during the boshin war by shogunate suporters to show their allegiance to the tokugawa shoguns...
So back to my question, how appropriate would it be for Matsudaira Katamori to wear the tokugawa mon?

    Anyone?

Matsudaira was the actual clan name, and Tokugawa was the name used by the Shogun and his main heir. The other children of the Shogun were Matsudaira, and the Aizu domain belonged to a direct offshoot of the Shogunate. The "Tokugawa crest" is actually the Matsudaira clan crest, and since the Aizu Matsudaira were true Matsudaira, part of the Shogun's extended family, they would certainly have used the clan crest.

Sometimes non-relatives were allowed to use the Matsudaira name as an honorific as well, but the Aizu family was truly Matsudaira, directly descended from Ieyasu. It gets a bit confusing because Ieyasu's biological grandson was adopted out of the family, and then later "reclaimed" by later generations and allowed to use the Matsudaira name again, but biologically the Matsudaira blood was unbroken, IIRC, and they only spent a very short time using a different name and crest.

    Hope that helps!

Just found out something interesting that speaks to this topic. The current head of the Tokugawa Clan (yes, they're still around) is the great-grandson of Matsudaira Katamori, so that should give you a sense of the family relationship.
