Couslands of Highever (References from Dragon Age: Origins)
The origin of family Cousland occurred when the King Elstan I of Highever granted to a bastard son of his uncle, called Sarim, the land where he founded the city of Amaranthine. For reasons not explained King Elstan I had great appreciation for his cousin Sarim, and Sarim used his great influence with the King to convince him to attack the island of Conobar, and attach those fields to his kingdom. The war ended with the victory of Highever, and the island was conquered effectively, but King Elstan I and his uncle Erlen died during the war, leaving the patch clear to Sarim claim the throne for himself, backed by an league of nobles and war veterans. He adopted the name Cousland because the way the people used to call the area he ruled, "The Lands of Cousin" or "Cousin lands".
The lineage of Sarim Cousland succeeded in keeping the region's lands and the nobles loyal to their cause, largely due to the fervor of Sarim to the Faith of the Maker, who has in Highever the center of his power, where within the Citadel walls has been built the Great Chantry of Light and the Circle of Maker Templars.
The current King Bryce Cousland I married Eleanor Howe, a member of one of the principal houses sworn to Couslands, instead of a foreign princess, further solidifying his position and control over his whole kingdom.
With the nobles at his side, and the Maker blessing him, King Bryce Cousland I have the perfect conditions to launch the long-awaited expansion of his kingdom.

Then the Maker said:
To you, my second-born, I grant this gift:
In your heart shall burn
An unquenchable flame
All-consuming, and never satisfied.
From the Fade I crafted you,
And to the Fade you shall return
Each night in dreams
That you may always remember me.[12]
And then the Maker sealed the gates
Of the Golden City
And there, He dwelled, waiting
To see the wonders
His children would create.
-Threnodies 5:1-5:8
The Chantry of Light says that a long time ago, the Maker created the Fade as His first world. His first children were the spirits of the Fade and the Maker believed He had made them in His own image. Yet the Maker turned away from His first children, because while they could alter their world at will, they lacked a soul, and could only copy, not create or imagine for themselves. Dissatisfied with the result, He left the Fade behind, creating the world of Thedas instead. The next realm that the Maker created was one that his new creations would not be able to change at will. He separated it from the first by putting the Veil in between them, not realizing that His first children would be able to observe His new children and grow envious of their ability to envisage new things.
The children that populated this new realm had the spark of the divine within them, which pleased the Maker. While their world was more solid than that of the spirits, these creatures were able to imagine, and dream new things because of it. But then the First Sin was committed. Malevolent beings whispered to men from across the Veil, and turned them to the worship of the Old Gods (Powerfull Spirits of the Fade that rules over various aspects of the creation. In the eyes of the faithful of Chanty of Light, all other gods worshiped in other religions are actually Old Gods, and thus all are below the Creator).
Disgusted by the betrayal of his new children, The Maker turned his back on mortals, and now resides in the Golden City, waiting until the day that mortals is again worthy of his blessing.
