Hello all,
I've been playing as Russia and the game has been pretty easy for me. Germany and Hungary declared war rapidly, but I did not have much trouble pushing them back and conquering them. I quickly learned that having artillery will always force the defenders to march against you. Although I played the vast majority of games I only had a few epic battles since I was using the formula above.
The most notable battle was Hungary's last stand in Sagreb Croatia. My army composed of 2 cannons, 2 regiments of snipers, my general and the rest all Syberian infantry vs several regiments of cav, 1 cannon unit and elite infantry. As a defender I tried to use the terrain as best as possible. Due to a sloped hill on the right, 4 regiments of infantry where isolated.
As the battle started I concentrated my arty on theirs hoping to take it out of operation quickly enough, but this was vane. The AI sent its cav followed by infantry to the right against my isolated infantry. Most of their cav died in the charge but they were able to tremble the lines and killed about 25% of my infantry there and created massive confusion. The infantry that followed pressed while AI's arty pounded that right flank. One by one they broke and ran away. My general rushed to rally the fleeing troops, but only 2 came back to their senses and reorganized, but they did not hold for long.
At that point the center flank gave up leaving the arty unprotected, but that also proved deadly for the enemy. After a few spreads their center flank gave up as well and with it their chances of winning. The battle ended with a last stand of their general protecting their cannons. It was a sad victory, 75% of my army perished.
Now it is the calm before the storm since I am building up my armies and readying to invade Europe.
