    Default Capturing enemy artillery (FOTS)

Playing as Aizu I'm determined to stay true to the old ways (by advancing only to tier two so that I won't be completely left behind in being able to set up trade with the west etc while still keeping some of the bonuses to social stability and traditional units) but this means I won't be able to recruit some of the finer artillery pieces such as the armstrong and gatling gun. So my idea is that I'll simply take it from my defeated enemies with bow and sword and use it against them! So my question is, how do you capture artillery? Is it random after you have defeated an enemy? Or maybe you have to kill all men manning the guns without destroying the gun itself (with shogitai for example?) How does capturing artillery work exactly?

    Thanx in advance!

From what I've read and experienced myself, it is random and moreover rare. Kill the unit, kill part of the unit, let them rout, or autoresolve doesn't seem to affect the rarity of it.

I think you need to kill off the crew without destroying the actual guns.

Or take over province that can build them (you don't need tech to recruit most of units, you need it to build building that allows recruiting). Problem is, that sometimes it takes agest for AI to get there.

Hmm.. so nobody really knows how capture artillery work... I guess it's random then?

Hmm... this idea is actually worth a thought. Are you sure that artillery recruitment is solely based on the building?

Recruiting units does indeed seem to be down to the buildings you own rather than the technology you have researched, I never research the technologies required to recruit monk units, but if I/when I take a province with the right buildings I can recruit monk units. However, I can only confirm this for low level units as the AI rarely seems to build anything that advanced in my campaigns!

Can't remember where specifically I saw it, but somewhere in the encyclopedia it says you can only capture artillery in siege battles. Only happened in autoresolve for me too.

Just kill the crew, you may not damage the guns. Good luck!

I've only captured wooden cannons, which are not worth keeping. Definitely wasn't only during siege battles, and the only common factor that I remember is that I didn't damage the cannons themselves. Suppose it makes sense that I haven't captured parrots or armstrong then, given that I usually destroy them with my own cannons. Maybe I'll try running them down with cavalry more often.

Mongol: The open steppe, fleet horse, falcons at your wrist, and the wind in your hair.
Mongol General: Wrong! Conan! What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
Mongol General: That is good! That is good.
