While marriage is a government policy you cannot limit it to certain people based on arbitrary preferences. It would be like preventing people who don't fulfill arbitrary criteria x, y and z from using government services like welfare.

A common retort seems to be "gay people aren't prevented from marrying based arbitrary preferences; they are perfectly entitled to marry a member of the opposite sex". Which shows how little empathy conservatives on this topic have. How would you like it if most of society was gay and they told you "straight people aren't prevented from marrying based on arbitrary preferences; they are perfectly entitled to marry a member of the same sex"? Never mind the fact that 60 years ago you could go to jail and be sterilized for being straight, and be utterly alienated by society?

Ideally the state would abolish their administration of marriage and make it a purely private/religious institution. That way some churches and organizations would offer gay marriage, and others that don't want to, don't have to.

OK by me - if two consenting adults want a committed relationship I can't see why they should not get all the same legal benefits as a slight different pair of adults.

And as far as I know no state does - at least in the US you can either pick a magistrate or a church that approves but nobody is forcing say Catholic priests to do gay marriage.

Honestly I really like somebody to explain the hysteria in something like DOMA - I have to see how gay marriage is something my own needs defense from.

I think it is okay, if that floats your boat. Can the OP please expand on the point of this thread - is there a discussion, or just a pop poll?

(I also don't see why polygamy is considered evil. I mean, if 3+ folks get together, and make a choice they wish to stay together, why the arbitrary 'pair' restriction? Most folks don't/won't - but why make it 'illegal' for those that do?)

I think it's more of a tax and insurance technicality than anything else.

and make a 3rd option, saying i don't care, or i don't have an opinion, but in all reality who cares about same sex marriage when there are more important disasters we have to worry about like the economic collapse of this country, personally i dont care if 2 guys get married all i care about is if i can pay my taxes and still afford to live
