    Default [DISCUSSION]Favorite Characters

Favorite POV characters: Daenarys Targaryen, Arya Stark
Favorite nPOV characters: Thoros, Barristan Selmy, Prince Doran, Petyr Baelish

I would put a post-littlefinger adoption Sansa Stark up there in favorite POV characters, but she has a lot of early idiocy to make up for yet So maybe Alayne Stone for pov character.

I have to preface this by saying that I've been reading a lot about this mod "in secret," but this is my first actual post. Really looking forward to the mod btw

    Anywho...

    POV characters: Tyrion, Dany, Jaime
Non-POV characters: Oberyn Martell, Rhaegar (yeah I know, technically he has been dead the entire time, but I love the character nonetheless), Jaqen H'ghar, Roose Bolton

"Five had been his brothers. Oswell Whent and Jon Darry. Lewyn Martell, a prince of Dorne. The White Bull, Gerold Hightower. Ser Arthur Dayne, Sword of the Morning. And beside them, crowned in mist and grief with his long hair streaming behind him, rode Rhaegar Targaryen, Prince of Dragonstone and rightful heir to the Iron Throne."

Honestly the only one I don't like is Arya. It has nothing to do with her story, but Martin sucks at writing about kids. Arya is nothing like an 8 year old...Same with Bran for that matter. I can appreciate that life has been hard on them and that they've had to grow up, but even a tough 8 year old isn't likely to be anything like Arya.

When I reread the books I skipped every Bran chapter and most of Arya's... heh.

A lot of times I find myself wondering if the Westeros years are longer than our years.

Loras is a jousting champion at like 16? Jamie is good enough to be in the Kingsguard by 15?

How do they measure years anyway? They clearly can't go by seasons as we do.

    Those are extraordinary examples though.

The years are the same. If you go to the ASOIAF website, westeros.org. You will find a section called so spoke Martin. He has been quoted saying the years are the same.

I don't think that, analogously, such things were uncommon in our Medieval period, after which ASOIAF is heavily modeled. After all, that time in history as well as the ASOIAF continuity are centered largely around war and warcraft, so I think its quite possible for younger people to do these things. This is especially true of the sons of noble lords, since they have access to the best training in martial affairs.

I've also noticed some odd lapses in time during the story, then again not all of the events happen in chronological order. I'm not too sure how much time has elapsed since AGOT to present.

From AGoT through the end of ASOS is 2 years. Since the Harrenhall tourney it has been 13 or 14 years. So keep that in mind (hint hint).

AFFC backtracks a little bit and then moves forward. I'm not done with AFFC, but I imagine it advances the story another year or so given that ADwD is going to tell the same time period.

I certainly don't disagree that a 15 year old could be winning a tourney or anything. I do however disagree that Arya & Bran would be capable of the higher order thinking skills they demonstrate in the book. No child has that kind of insight into the world...no matter how hard their last 2 years were. Keep in mind these kids were totally pampered and naive for the better part of their lives.

When I was 15 I can run a 5 minute mile and bench 130 and leg press 215. So I don't think physical prowess is out of reach for a 15 year old. Look at Rooney..at 18 he was a star in the Premiership or consider Maurice Clarrett and his incredible success at 18 for Ohio State (until he self-destructed).

I'm not sure I remember what you mean by Arya and Bran showing "higher reasoning skills".

Bran for one still seems very much a small child. Jojen on the other hand does seem too mature for his supposed age, despite his visions.

Arya...she's 10 or 11 now, isn't she? And the big thing that makes it believable to me is that she did start out like a spoiled kid, and would have continued being so if she hadn't been thrown out on her own with Jaqen and The Hound and had to fend for herself.

Arya is believable.......evil but oh well.

My favorites are Jon, Tyrion, Ned , Jaime, Davos, and Bran.

POV characters: Tyrion, Dany, and Jon
Non-POV characters: Barristan Selmy, Greatjon Umber and oh ya this guy called THE HOUND!

...oh and I also tend to skip the chapters on Bran and Arya. Or atleast just skim through them, not the first time I read the book, I read every word the first time through and then i listen to it all the way through but after that thats when I skip them. Although I must say that now that Arya is in the free cities i have become a little more interested. and I did become more interested in the last chapter of Brans as well. i am actually looking forward to both there stories in the upcoming book/books

I can't do that. I read every single paragraph. That's the only way I really, really understand the story and pick up all the little subtle things. I'm getting ready to start a POV by POV re-read. For example, all of Brans chapters, all of Arya's chapters, etc etc. instead of reading front to back.

Next time I read though I will probably skim the Catlyn chapters, also most of the Sansa chapters before she goes off with Petyr.

Bran can get kind of boring too.

Arya is always pretty interesting IMO.

after listening to the 2nd book I have to add a name to my favorite not-POV characters.....Jaqen H'ghar. I guess reading it i didnt catch on to the way he spoke. he speaks like he is narrating, Its awesome.

"A man hears, A man sees, A man knows...."

..and the guy reading it does such a great job verbalizing exactly the way Jaqen would sound, smooth, soft, deadly!

Jaime is my favorite character. He is super complex. The way martin writes him is just really great.

Arya is like 11 if I recall correctly.
