Default Mafia/Werewolf game, Lord of the Rings style

    Dear TATW community,

Are you guys familiar with the internet game called "Mafia" or in some communities "Werewolf"? There has been a real life card game of it as well. People that love to solve riddles, like to debate, or would like to plot, backstab and organise, will really love this game! For the people that aren't familiar with it, it basically comes down to this:

A host puts together a game and allows/invites players to sign up. Afterwards, he distributes all roles randomly over the players. These roles are divided over 2 camps; Town and Evil. The players that receive a town-like role will have to attempt to get all evil roles out, while the evil roles will have to try to equal their numbers with town to win the game. Everyone's role remains hidden, until a player dies; his role will be revealed. Usually, the evils know each other as well. Depending on the game, some good guys know each other too.

The game starts with a day phase in which everyone will talk and discuss whom to lynch/vote out of the game. The townies will attempt to vote out an evil by asking questions, discussing motives and questioning previous actions. Evils will attempt to blend in and survive the day and possibly try to set someone else up for lynching. Unless under high exception, lynching/voting is mandatory and the person with the highest amount of votes is out of the game. Depending on the game, a day phase may take 12, 24, 36 or more hours so everyone has a good chance to answer and plead their cases. Time extensions are possible if requested.

Once someone has been voted out, the night phase starts. The remaining evil(s) discuss (in private chat if they are wise) on whom to kill that night and send their target to the host. Depending on the game, they could send in other night actions as well. Townies, in case they are capable, can send in their night actions as well by sending a private message to the host.

This continues, until, as I said already, either town gets rid of all evils, or the evils equalise their numbers and then kill off the remaining townies.

There is a very newbie friendly tutorial going around the internet. Check this link out if you want to know more:

    Common roles:

    town:
Townie. A regular townie with no special powers. Can vote like anyone else.
Seer/Cop: Can investigate someone at night. Will show the seer/cop the role of said person.
Doctor: Can provide medical support to someone at night. If your target is attacked that night, that person will survive the attack.

    Evil:
    - Werewolf/Mafia Goon. A regular goon/wolf with no special powers. Can pick a target to kill at night with his team members.
    - Mafia Boss/Alpha wolf. The leader of the evil team. Will decide who will be targeted next night.
    - framer. Will mix up a seer/cop result if his target is seered/investigated that night.

There are of course many more roles already and it's very much possible to set these games up large and in a theme. If you guys want, I could first host a small game with a fixed and easy setup and then set up a special game in Lord of the Rings style after.

Sign up for the test game here!

Barrow Downs has this in Lord of the Rings style.

You can find their version here: http://forum.barrowdowns.com/forumdisplay.php?f=24

I've always wanted to try one of these, never had the chance, also a LOTR version would be very cool!

Whilst I've never played I have read a fair few so I know the basics.

Thanks for the link. I'll take a look. I don't think it would hurt to just try a game. If popularity demands it, I could set up a second game; Hosting a small one barely takes effort.

Sign up here people if you want to try it! First come, first serve. 9 free spots. If you're late, I will put you on the reserve list, or perhaps set up a second game if too many people reply.

    Reserve list:

edit: I'll take the classic "C9" setup. (Don't ask me why it's called that way) It means:
    - 2 evils, 5 townies and:
    > a cop and a doctor
    > a cop and a townie
    > a doctor and a townie
    > 2 more townies

For gameplay reasons, I won't reveal which of these variations I will use.

    Notification:
This thread will be moved to the Coloseum if begun; http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=60
This part of the forum is intended for TATW, and in extension Tolkien, and it's the practice that this forum shall be free from games, especially if generic simply clad in LotR robes (no disrespect, simply a conclusion).

This is naturally a grey area, but thats what the moderators are here for, and games not truely based and liked to TATW and potentially Tolkien will be directed to the part of the forum for games.
Promotion linking to game such as this is in the Coloseum is fine, but the game should not go on here.

    regards Ngugi

Aha. Yeah, that sounds fair. Yet, it would seem nice to me to play with the old trusted TATW people you already know. Also, after this "beta test", I could really modify a game LotR style. I did it with more games already elsewhere. If you're interested, I could send you 4 samples of it. It would include mechanics completely based on LotR (perhaps on the game as well), specific roles and possibly roleplaying from the people that participate.

edit: I'm afraid such a specific game won't make much sense in the Colliseum to be honest, but up to you.

It could also be moved to the multiplayer section.

An example on how a fully modified werewolf game can look like:

    No, cos it's a game.

I think I played this is school some years ago, but I'm not interested now.
