Default Is anyone up to the challenge? £100 reward

I am appealing to the TW community to help out with a persistent problem I have been having with Shogun 2, Fall of the Samurai.

I have tried the official Total War support forum, but even the tech guys there can't come up with a solution.

Call me crazy but I will offer a reward of £100 to the person who comes up with a workable solution to this problem. Good luck, I have trying for six months!

    Description of the symptoms:

When I play 1-2-1 multiplayer battles via my avatar, or campaign drop in battles in a single player campaign, I get a persistent yet intermittent freezing during the battle. The battle runs fine for a couple of minutes then the whole game freezes for a few seconds, then continues normally again. This process continues throughout the battle. When the battle freezes I also cannot move the camera. It is as if the computer locks up temporarily.

I also get 'the player has left the game' and 'there has been a desync in game' messages if I don't manage to get to the actual battle screen, followed by a crash. I don't know if this is connected, but it is the freezing issue that concerns me the most.

Out of ten multiplayer battles I will get 1 that runs fine, and about 9 that either has the freezing issue, or has a desync.

The problem is NOT there when I play against the AI, it is only multiplayer.

I get the freezing with FOTS and the original STW2 game. I have also had a problem with regular desyncs with both games, though after a Windows re-install these seem to have cleared up.

I also play NTW and it works fine - no freezing issue with drop in or 1-2-1 battles, or desyncs.

The solutions I have tried - all failed:

Ensured all latest drivers are up to date (Motherboard, chipset, graphics cards - everything) I use Driver Manager which updates every possible driver
Flashed the BIOS to newest version
deleted any multiple drivers found via Device Manager (e.g sound drivers)
    Scanned for viruses
    turned anti-virus off
    turned firewall off
    re-installed the game
    re-installed steam
    re-installed Windows 7 (twice)
tried installed windows 7 with non of the latest drivers or any additional programmes or apps - only steam and shogun 2 - freezing still persists
replaced router( I have a Virgin media super hub)
    replaced ethernet cables
contacted Virgin Media - checked download speeds and ping. All working fine though occasionally when using www.speedtest the download speeds would drop below my range (I'm on 60 meg package, superfast broadband)
    Forwarded Ports
    Tried increasing page file
Tried installing game on a second computer using the same network (it uses windows xp). I DON'T get the freezing issue with this computer, but I DO get regular desyncs
Shut off unneccessary processes and services
tried various different video card drivers
I have tried with mods installed and mods uninstalled

I originally thought it must be a problem with my network connection, but I have tested my download speeds and ping and most of the time they are fine. Also if I had a network issue surely I would see the freezing issue in STW2 and NTW as well as on FOTS on the second computer I used? Though as I mentioned, I was still getting desyncs when playing these games, and on the second computer, so theoretically it could still be a network issue.

I am going to take my computer up to another address and test it on a completely separate network. This should tell me for sure.

I also thought it was a problem with FOTS, but I don't see anyone else with the same problem on any of the forums. If it was a game issue, there would loads of complaints.

Finally I thought it could be a hardware problem, perhaps a fault in my motherboard. But again, if this is the case, how come NTW works fine, and I don't get freezing in STW2?

well as you can see I am completely stumped - no matter what I do, the problem persists. Can anyone shed some new light on this?

My DX DIAG is a bit out of date - I have updated ALL the drivers since then (Chipset, Motherboard, video card, sound via Driver Manager)

Well, I'm no tech guy, but from what you've put forward, I'd say it's a network issue. It only occures when you're playing MP. You also say it has happened with S2TW but not with NTW. Well, the MP in NTW is not as complex as S2TW and FOTS.

My tip is, try on another network. If that doesn't, go to the local IT shop. They are trained and will have a better chance af helping as they will be able to look at your computer.

One question; disc or digital download?

    Hi Jokern,

Thanks for the reponse and sharing your thoughts - the freezing only happens with FOTS not the original S2TW, however both suffer from de-syncs. This could be the same issue manifesting itself in a different way, i don't know.

I have read in some forums that Virgin Broadband does sometimes have poor line quality i.e high pings and line 'Jitter.' I've noticed on pingtest that my work computer has a grade A line. I'm also going to test my network at home and see how it fairs.

I also need to do a Ping test on Steam's servers, but just waiting for them to send me the I.P addresses for thier London and Manchester servers (Which I use via steam).

Keep the ideas coming guys! Thanks

Check your video card isn't overheating during MP battles.

I had a very similar issue with a different online game, it sent me mental. It wasn't until it finally packed up that I took the cover off the card and it was chock full solid of fluff etc. It was cooked and too late by then so I changed the card which fixed things.

    Anyway, just a thought.

My cousin gets this frequently. I would recommend getting another provider.

Thanks Thror - I am considering this, but I have more testing to do first. No point swapping if this is not the issue. What provider would you, or anyone else recommend for gaming??

Wired or wireless connection to your router/modem?

Note: I was googling for a possible solution earlier and stumbled across your thread about this on the totalwar.com forums that has about 4 pages of people suggesting various solutions. Anyone who wants to suggest something should probably see if it's already been covered there.

You also seem to have had viruses at one point. Although you've done a complete reinstall you never know, stuff might still be screwed up. If you had viruses before, you could easily have them again, especially if you installed some.. shall we say, less than legitimate games after reinstalling windows?

Considering the desync problems are also happening on a second machine, it would certainly seem like your network is the culprit here. Running a packet analyzer like Wireshark (wireshark.org) during a game and looking at the logs around the time when you get a desync could give you a clue about what is actually going wrong.

The freezing sounds like a much weirder issue if it really only affects multiplayer games rather than (atleast occasionally) happening in versus AI battles as well. I'd probably try solve the desyncs first and see if it magically makes the freezing go away, as it seems unlikely to be any easily deduced issue with the rest of the system if it only manifests during multiplayer.

Thanks Cruzz thats very helpful - I had never heard of wireshark.org

I have always suspected the network, but its quite hard to pinpoint the problem because I have good download speeds and I have no problems surfing the internet etc. However there may be some issue with peer to peer. Would you recommend a good internet provider (for gaming) if I chose to dump virgin? Or is it more likely to be a problem with my area? (I'm in the centre of Edinburgh so it should be fine)

    Hi Charsi,

I have a wired connection to my routar.

Yea you have found my mammoth thread, and good point anyone who has suggestions should read this first. It alludes to a desync problem which started first, and then goes on to mention the freezing which is the main issue I am dealing with.

    http://forums.totalwar.com/showthrea...nc-in-the-game

I have had viruses, but I have done a complete Windows Re-install and routed out any viruses using CC cleaner and Anti-malware Bites. But I did have a nasty Trogen that was hard to shift at some point. I have done numerous scans but no new viruses have been found. I havn't installed any other games, legitimate or less than legitimate! I don't know what else to do to check nothing has been left behind?

....pls prepare to cash in your £100 to my paypal account...
    1. Go to Steam -> settings -> turn off steam cloud.
    2. Log off steam.
    3. Go to your steam folder and delete "userdata" folder.(yes, you will lose all your avatar record, your veterans, etc, backup if you want)
    4. Start Steam again and play the game.

I only get the freezing issue on FOTS but I do get regular desyncs with S2MP and ROTS MP and FOTS MP

    Hi Cruzz,

I ran Wireshark while playing FOTS - I found I was getting quite a few Binding Error Response and Bad Checksum error messages. I get the bad checksum error message even when I run Wireshark without playing FOTS. It seems the bad checksum error message happens only on the IPV4 and Ethernet protocols. Any idea what this means?

    Thanks

If every other MP game you play with similar demands is ok then it can only be an issue with Steam or CA.

OOI, when you tested on another machine was it tested at your house or your mates and was the CPU or video card the same as yours?

Really strange that you get problems on shogun only and not napoleon which makes it seem like a shogun specific problem, however...
I was having network issues with my virgin media super hub that were causing my ping to spike intermittently during online games. It was due to having a computer with a wireless n connection and a laptop with a wireless g connection, I replaced the wireless g connection with a wireless n dongle and everything worked fine. It did only happen when both the computer and laptop were switched on (and connected to the network), so if your having the problem when only one system is on then just ignore everything i've said

Edit. if you have a wireless g network card, you could try using a wireless n dongle anyway, it might work because I believe the virgin super hub is designed more for wireless n.
Edit. Just read that your using a wired connection.. have you disabled your wireless adapters? Just make sure nothing is connecting to the hub via wireless g and disable anything like hamachi (i've had that conflicting with steam connections before).

fy9090, a brave man for thinking this is the solution, but I will try all the same! Thanks for your input.

By the way..some more info for you.

I have suspected that the freezing issue is only present later in the day. I have noticed that everyhting seems to work fine in the morning (between 8am and 10ish) but is bad at lunch time and onwards.

I tested my ping this morning via pingtest and I got a grade A connection.

I'll try a ping test at different times of the day, but as I say it seems that the problem is worse later in the day, I expect when more people are using the steam servers?

Could this an issue with the connection between my network and the steam servers? if so would changing my ISP help?

Just a thought, not conclusive yet.

This could be a long shot and might not even be something that helps, but worth a try no?! Have you tried forwarding your ports or opening a DMZ on your router for your PC? I was able to fix the annoying could not connect to host issue on NTW and EMPIRE by doing this, I made a video to show how.

Don't know if this will work but seeing as this seems to be network related, never know I guess.
