    Default Friendly Moors?

I'm a Total War noob (only have played E:TW a few hours some years ago) so I don't know if this is normal but...

Well, I think a few pics will explain better the situation (the two "THINGS" happened in less than 40 turns):

Alliance beetwen Spain and the Moors

War beetwen Spain and Portugal... Well, it's OK - Alliance beetwen the Moors and... THE POPE?!
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

I'M SCARED! FRIENDLY MOORS AND A TOLERANT POPE!!!

I registered an account only to share this experience... I hope this is something really strange to see, or I will look like a total badass.

The AI in Medieval 2 Total War don't really care about historical accuracy. They're all somewhat opportunistic and stupid.
Medieval 2 Total War Blitz Record with the Turks - 14 turns!
Medieval 2 Total War Peasant Campaign Challenge with Egypt - 112 regions - 27 turns to spare!
Next challenge : Total War: Shogun 2 - Ikko Ikki Legendary Campaign - No agents, temples, loan swords.

It's the AI. The AI is just really stupid, and doesn't really understand that the Moors and spanish/portugese don't like each other very much. If you're lucky you might get to see the pope ally with egypt. It is gonna happen a lot. Just get used to it. OR you could try a couple mods, since some of them fix the broken AI

I have prepared some mods to play with them, but right now I'm stucked with a laptop that only runs M2TW Vanilla until I arrive home.

Yes, I know the AI is crap but this is... EXTREME. But hey, it doesn't bother me, I find it hilarious.

Well, it's not as if warfare was constantly maintained between different religious states. Overall, the history between the Christian and Muslim states of Iberia has been pretty violent, but I don't think that it's totally implausible that if history had taken a different turn, maybe the Castillians and Granadans would have allied against Portugal or something. I think it would probably be more likely to be seen if one looked at the smaller Moorish taifa states, or the relatively minor Ibero-Catholic states like some Catalan county or something. Moorish-Spanish and Moorish-Papal alliances aren't historically accurate to be sure. Historically plausible? I'm not really sure.

for some reason the moors have always been incredibly friendly to me, no matter what faction i play as, they never start wars against me and if i start a war they will always ask to end it

    You guys have friendly Moors?

Whenever I play they always act like a giant horde, by turn 30 they'll have most of Africa, Egypt will have one region, and they'll have Spain, Southern France and West Germany.

Once I played and at turn 15 they had Caernarvon.

I have also been very surprised by the Moors releasing one of my family members and a lot of soldiers they were lucky enough to capture- they really are jolly nice chaps and I always treat them well in return.

I love the Moors AI, they are so nice. However, they will occasionally come down to my nearest city with a diplomat, making hilarious demands. I'm talking about The Moors coming down, and demanding 50 florins. I always give it to them, because it makes me laugh so much. I just imagine how a king would have reacted to such a demand back in the medieval era. Freaking awesome.

If you take a look at relations code (I never have, I just know through others what's in there), different religious factions have degrading relations (ie there is a penalty applied each turn), but if two factions form an alliance, this degradation will be overrided by the bonus alliances gives to relations each turn.

My point? As long as Islamic factions get an alliance with the Pope or any Catholic faction early on, the alliance can stick for a long time. Granted once the Pope is replaced with a Pope from Faction X and Faction X has been at war with Moors/Egypt/w/e, don't count on their alliance sticking for a long time.

Another time cross religion alliances break are later in the game when the Pope has a strong military and a crusade is called on their ally. Then you'll see the Pope gladly break his alliance and go on crusade with the other crusaders.
    *Poof*
    There goes the Papal-Islamic alliance.

Another strange alliance that happens often is a Byz-Hungary alliance. This typically happens since both factions tend to see Venice as opposition.
