Default Just Started Playing Medieval II..

Hey guys my first post here. I've had Rome for quite a while and really enjoyed playing it. I've played through the campaigns many times and always enjoyed it. I recently purchased Medieval II/Kingdoms and it doesn't seem to be as enjoyable? I played one campaign completely (France) and I am in the process of finishing the Americas as Spain.

I can't seem to put a finger on it but do you feel if Rome was more enjoyable to you / more fun when compared to Medieval II/Kingdoms?

Or.. maybe it's just because I know less about Medieval time period..

I enjoyed Medieval II more than Rome myself, but that's probably because Rome was a bit more 'arcade' than the serious Medieval II if you ask me.

What are you looking for from the game exactly? There are mods out there to suit your needs probably.

    This.

Also, if your used to playing in a Roman era setting, it's only natural that it takes some getting used to playing in a medieval period.

If I may recommend a mod? Try THERA. It's a fantasy mod. Basically it's all eras and cultures in one mod on a fantasy map. It has a Roman faction, a Medieval one, Viking, Indians, Aztecs, Crusaders Renaissance, Pirates, Irish-style and even Uruk-hai (yes, from LOTR!).

I felt the same when I changed from Rome to Medieval 2.
My main gripe was that it is less diverse. In Rome there were very different factions where you had to adapt (like you didn't have heavy infantry as Parthia or didn't have good cavalry as Greek Cities). In Medieval it is easier, as every faction has at least 1 charger cavalry unit, some kind of spearmen and some kind of missile infantry: you can play hammer and anvil with every faction (true, some are better then others), there is no diversion in unit rosters like in Rome.

Nowadays I think of Medieval 2 more like as a platform upon which I install mods. Compared to Rome quite a few bugs are corrected (like squalor cities, a graphical setting - unit size - having impact on population, weird unit behaviour, strange morale settings/easy mass routs), the AI is the same.

I think play 1-2 short campaigns, then install a mod or two to see if it suits your style.

Personally I love both RTW and M2TW. Overall I'm a sucker for the Dark Ages and so I've probably pumped many more hours into M2TW than RTW.

Have you tried playing a Islamic faction and a Catholic faction all the way through? They play extremely differently both with unit setups and historical events (jihads/crusades and as Egypt/Turkey you're basically preordained to have to fight the Mongols/Turmurids).

The other way to think of it is RTW is a game in a time period with many different cultures competing for power while M2TW is a game centered more around 2 main cultures (3 if you count the orthodox religion) competing for power using politics (Papal elections, excommunications, Papal favor) and crusades/jihads.

For me, I love the added political intrigue the college of cardinals adds, but I can definitely see other players missing the much more diverse culture (and unit diversity as a result) in RTW.

Hmm, i love both Rome and Medieval 2, but i think i like Medieval 2 abit more than Rome. I think the reason why you found Rome more enjoyable, might be because you like that time period more?

Medieval 2 is fantastic. It's the best game I've ever played on any platform in my life - including Xbox, PC and PS3. I absolutely love M2tw.

Certainly it was M2TW, infact I played the RTW demo when it first came out - already a MTW and STW (the originals) player, I was excited by the prospect of RTW, but found that the camera and controls weren't to my liking. Friends of mine had RTW and I'd played a few times, but always found it was really plain.

The factions all felt way too similar, and the disparity between Roman factions and "Barbarian" factions too great (ie. Rome too strong, barbarians too pathetic).

M2TW offers what is one of my fave periods, and I feel that the range of troop types, rosters, and factions/cultures present is extremely diverse. I know there are plenty of standard-troops / repeats, but I really get the sense that each faction is unique and plays in a different way altogether.

I love the fact that m2tw engine will allow not only... Very 'ancient' style combat -- dark age shield walls, to the late "Pike and Shot" type of combat.

With the mods out there, you can see that m2tw is able to cover all bases of classical warfare -- There's ancient-themed mods, there's civil war (usa) mods, there's UK civil war mods, "Muslim World" mods etc.

    Huge variety.

Dude, can you send me a link to that UK Civil war mod?

Dodo , the mod is called "For King or Country" - often simply "FKOC", it's been out for some time and is a M2tw non-kingdoms mod. It's found here in the m2tw hosted mods section.

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/forum...lish-Civil-War

There's also another mod, found in the Kingdoms hosted-mod section called 1648 - 30 years war mod, which is the same kind of time-period / warfare style, but has a fuller map of Central Europe (german, swedes, poles, russians etc)

Please rep me for my posts, not for the fact that i have a Pony as an Avatar.
