Vassal

How does this work in diplomacy? NEVER managed to agree on this. Even when I am the strongest Kingdom around and my enemy is the most pathetic one with one city remaining....Should I just call this a diplomatic fail, or is there a way to get to this point?

there are two main ways of getting good success in vassaling. the 1st way is to simple offer them a ton of money. You'll get it all back the next turn anyway. the 2nd way is to wait until they ask for peace, it puts you in a position of power that makes demanding vassal not seem so demanding. You can sometimes force them to ask for peace if you start diplomacy and ask for things like map information or annexing cities. If the faction wants peace it will ask for it.

also reputation and how that faction views you matters. if it is untrustworthy don't bother you need trustworthy or above to get vassals.

After playing M2TW since it came out, I got my first vassal that I didn't have to pay thousands of florins to!!! As Denmark, with a metropolis of the entire Baltic Sea + Kiev, Breslau, Rheims, Bruges & Antwerp, and Edinburgh, I gave Scotland map info in return for vassalage

Cheerz, this will be useful for me, because of my conflicts with HRE. I thought it's all about bigger power and better relationships with the country.

Here's two good threads about this subject. One involves general strategies for doing it without cheats or exploits, the other uses console commands.

Hope that helps. Getting vassals is one of my favorite thing to do, but it can be frustrating sometimes when the enemy just doesn't want to give up.

If I understand things correctly when a faction is yor vassal that means you are the "real" ruler of their realm correct? You see I'm not too familiar with this, i did it once as Spain and I was at war with Egyp, them after they ask for peace i asked for vassalage they agred for two turns until I went to war with another Muslim
Faction they broke it off and declared war on me. Why?

And since in I never really used vassal
Does that mean i have decision-making power over their noes, cities and military?

No. It means that you get free money (because the AI cheats) and military access. That is it.

On higher difficulties, the AI gets free money. (or so I think)

Not fully, you only get a large portion of their income each turn and their territories are counted towards yours, so if you have 10 regions and your vassal has one, on the faction summary page you'll see you are in control of 11 regions.

Since you havent specified the situation, i cant say the exact reason why, but your new enemy might have been an ally of Egypt or they just decided to brake off yur vassalage. In vanilla vassalage is pretty delicate and the AI breakes it often.
