Default most fun unit to use en masse

I am just wondering what unit you guys think is the most FUN to use en masse. It does not have to be a good unit just a FUN one. I find it a bit repetitive (the campaign). I find the later non feudal knights in plate really fun and also longbows. I think that like most people the campaign gets boring after a long while and instead I love trying to build personalized stacks. Another question is how do you turtle. I find that the AI attacks me and that I end up blitzing him. Finally what is the most FUN way to play and with which facton this includes roleplaying.

Sorry if this is quite long and I would be happy to be redirected to old threads. Thankyou

Mortars + Pikemen defending a bridge = fun!

Horse archers (full 20 unit army). It really is astonding to see how fast you can shoot an army to death while being extremely mobile.
Possibly a full army of nafutun could be fun. I'd probably put them as defense in a siege though. They'd be way to vunerable in the open field.

On the flip side, a full army of musketeers is extremely hard to get to work very well despite the fact you'd think they'd just dominate.

ill counter them with a stack : 15 archers 5 spread out spear units because HA when they finish the arrows charge into the archers and rout them

I like to turtle this way, I first develop my cities, castles, capture some rebel settlements around me, and keep developing, I'm attacked I defend myself but I usually don't counter-attack until I have very good units, (dismounted feudal knights at least and above) then I start capturing the enemy, I also wait until I have like the perfect army, a full stack 20 mixed in the best units I have, 2 knight units, 8 missile units and general bodyguard, the rest all 9, heavy infantry, possible 2 units of pikemen for defending my flanks against cavalry, but I rarely use 'em since they are useless fighting.

And a good way to play should you keep it realistic, for example, if you play as England, take the scots and the french, if you play as France, be a Crusader, if you play as the Holy Roman Empire, quarrel with the Pope and the eastern factions. And stick to it, until you finish all that and there is only other factions to conquer, then you do so.

Greek Fire and Mangonels defending a bridge are very fun to use en mass.

    1) Missile cavalry / heavy cavalry, vs the Mongols (or Huns in Rome). Because the AI always seems to think "Hmm... I'm playing as a faction that is famous for it's cavalry. I know! I'll fill up half my unit slots with foot archers/light spears!", which means you can turn the tables on them nicely and beat them the way they were supposed to beat everyone else.

    2) Generals.

    3) Artillery - adds dignity to what would otherwise be an unseemly brawl. (If by "dignity" you mean "massive firey death").

lol i remember as the Sarmations in Rome:BI when the Huns arrived you would have like 7 family members and like 3 armored missile cavalry, and you could just sally forth and en mass slash and dash your way through the hun army.

Why would you have a shoot-out between archers and HAs? Just charge the things and shoot to death the spears after their bowmen are dead or running.

Jannisary Archers - watch the enemy march up to them confidently, then suddenly they become confused about what is going on, then they run away without getting into contact!

4 Greek firethrowers, 1 varangian guard, and 1 general vs. 20x Canons of Holy Sepulchre (max upgraded with 3x gold) on a river crossing battle.

Mangonels and Greek fire, that's just great.

In TATW take 10 Silvan heavy archers and 10 sentinels because they can deploy stakes. Whole stack of them, put on top of a hill, mountainside and than just watch. You don't even have to watch how the enemy goes down, just looking at the bar that shows the balance and the percentage of troops killed is awesome. Put up two enemy stacks if you want to make the enemy at least arrive and get into melee with your highly superior troops.

As the poster said there is no greek fire in Middle Earth but there is a similar unit in TATW with some sub-mods. They are these Rhunic Dragon Worshipers who are like Greek Fire but they also can fight in a melee when required.
