Default Any strategies for the K-Shah late campaign vs The Mongols?

Hi all I'm a relative newbie here on the forums . have been playing SS for a little while now and had a few games playing as different factions from England all the Way to the Moors always on VH/VH and have had great fun with it. however I really need some expert advice from you Veterans of the Stainless Steel wars.

I really like a challenge but everytime I try to play as the Kwarezmians I cannot seem to stop the mongols.. currently on VH /VH Savage AI and RR/RC no BGR

have tried a few things like loads of forts and chokepoints at bridges and mountain passes etc. as well as fully filling the castles with stacks of archers artillery and spears

however everything I try and put in front of those pesky mongols just simply get liquified into oblivion.

anybody have a good strategy on how to conquer the Mongol threat (and hopefully onward to the rest of the world) as the Persians?

well this is a way to do it, allthough it may sound unfair for the mongols . at the start use a diplomat and all your monney to sign a ceasefire treaty and a alliance, then move all your forces to their city and conquer it. Since they only had 1 city their faction is now eliminated . This may take some practice however it toke me 4 time trying to accomplish it, but after that things get alot easier. I hope this will help you out

hahaha! that is so mercenary and ruthless! I would only resort to this method If i was ready to throw my PC out of the window from being creamed by those flipping mongol stacks (which might be soon)

@Flyingcat Thank you!!! your advice is golden on this matter +rep!

I will try and go for the Dread approach as you cant afford to be nice to those Pagan infidels and for RPing purposes the K-Shah initiated the dread route by sending back those diplomats heads back to the Khan

I will post pictures of my upcoming new campaign once I get a foothold and get past the stage where money and reinforcing troops flows smoothly.

    Nope.
I offer Two ways to deal Mongols:
First,to defend every settlement seriously and try to defeat Mongol in Persia.Hard and time-wasting,so I don't suggest it.

The second is to take expeditions westward by Jihad.

]Preparation:Ally with Turkey and sell some east settlements to make sure that none of your regions is next to a Mongol one.Besides, assemble your eastern army in Baghdad and order your western army to seize control of Baghdad,Ahvaz (and Basra). All these should be done before 10 at worst.Never sell or abstain Kermanshah,Alamut and Shiraz.

West Expedition:Now hopefully you'll have two full-stack handy troops in Baghdad. To choose a:
    Chivalric campaign
Jihad Jerusalem and occupy most settlements.Use Persian/Turkish Archers to skirmish, and force their knights charge out.Now immediately control Noblemen&BG to stop the charge, then order spear/ghulam to hold the line and make heavy cav out of combat. After these, lead cav and light inf to attack flank&rear. It'll be easier if you've javelinmen in your troops, because they are suitable to kill enemy general at this time.
After conquering the Crusader States,it's not hard to give Egypt the same fate because your Noblemen are enough to crush their infantry and Persian archers could shoot Mamluks off.Hopefully you could do this before turn 30.

    Dread Campaign
Jihad Constantinople and sack&exterminate most settlements. With high dread generals it's easy to conquer Balkan and Southern hungary before turn 30.I think only three hints are needed.
1:Train Spies and Assassins. There's great difference if you have a spy open the rebel settlements for you,and assassins could chastise the priests and some generals easily, which makes your campaign smoother.
    2:Bring merchants and Imams westward,because it's lucrative.
3:When you face Athanatoi,Use bodyguard to stop their charge and a militia to keep combat with it.After your winning on the main infantry line is assured, order 1 Noblemen+Javelin or Ghulam to attack at its rear
Always make the noblemen charge its rear. After three or four charges it could be greatly weakened.

    East Defence
In the east,Mongols might threat your triangle-defence(Kermanshah-Alamut-Shiraz) at turn 18-28.
Retain your heavy cav and some archers in Kermanshah, and fill Alamut&Shiraz with spearmen,Ghulam and Javelin(important).Your defending army could hold two waves of attack without help if well controlled, and your cav&archers should reinforce the city when the third wave raises a siege. In this way it's not hard to defend the cities before turn 35.
At turn 30,you've got a rich economy and decent armies to rival against the Mongols.March eastward to compete with them on the battlefield.

    Battle Strategy
1:Attack the Mongols sometimes, don't always defend.Because it's better to stay up-hill than merely stay in city. When you're assured that you'll be on the upper hill and your general is very good, you should lead a weaker army(4:5 9:10 or 1:1 will be the best) to attack because on the battlefield, the Mongols will march towards you under the rain of arrows.Otherwise it will be your archers who march trembling under Mongols' arrows.
2:A preparation of Miscellaneous troops and "Night Fighter".The mongols stacks will come in groups of three-four,and you can prepare three stacks on one side.Use spy to scout, and choose your army accordingly. For example:

Dismounted Turhagut + Hoshiga mainly: Heavy cav and Archers

    Turhagut mainly:Heavy cav(stop charge),saracen militias(to absorb the combat) and javelin/archers(who give damage).

Turhagut+Nukeri:Use a mixture of elite army.

Night fight so you can fight them one by one.

PS:Mourtatoi has stakes. If you truly couldn't defeat the Mongols, train some Mourtatoi to relieve.

I have played several late era campaigns as the Kwarezmians on vh/vh and it's very hard to fend off the mongols, although it can be done.

I seldom fight open field battles against the mongols. I tend to try to defend some strongholds. Key cities are Alamut (build ballista towers), Kermanshah and if possible Shiraz. Also take and hold Ahvaz and Baghad (build ballista towers), and also take Basra, Sharjah and the other city on the east coast of the Arabian peninsula - they will provide valuable income. You can also make a stand i Damghan to kill some mongol staks, but it will eventually fall.

When defending a city I usually go for spearmen that can do schiltrom formation at the gate, and javelins behind them to hit their cavalry once the enter the gate, and infantry and archers on the walls, plus some Kwarezmian noblemen to charge at their siege machines. A mangonel or two and a trebuchet also come in handy.

Most of your other cities are doomed, and I only keep one unit in them. When the mongols lay siege on them, I sell all my city improvements for cash.

The mongols tend to use a lot of assassins, so have some in hand to counter them and to hit at their generals.

Call a jihad an one of the mongol cities. This will bring in other muslim troops to aid you in your fight.

You can see me (and Novgorod) successfully destroying the mongols below:

You can enhance this method: Send diplomats to the West, sell all buildings from a doomed settlement and then sell the settlement itself to the Seljuks/Crusader States/Fatimids or whoever you like (BEFORE the Mongols besiege it). The Mongols will take the settlement and thus enter into a state of war with the faction(s) of your choice. So:

    a) You will be making more money, since you sell the settlement on top of all the buildings.
    b) You will make the Mongols enter into war with other factions, improving your diplomatic options (at some point the Mongols will even desire peace with you).

Guides and resources section is a repository of SS guides\resources not a section for asking questions like this. Use the main section for this. Thread moved out to SS main.
