    Default The Armenian Genocide

I've been meaning to read up on it for a while, having formally heard of it only briefly and then reminded of it by checking up on the origins of American-Armenian band System of a Down.

I read the brief Wikipedia article - here - and mean to read further, but for the moment... thoughts?

The brutality displayed here is truly shocking. Releasing homicidal criminals to gaurd defenceless, starving civilians?

    Sickening, hateful stuff.

i also have been wondering about this subject, since it seems some people mention the genocide in other threads and since they dont teach about it in school i have no idea when it even happens

Why don't you make some proper contributions to the thread instead of writing up pointless remarks.

There's a class at my school called "Holocaust Studies" (it doesn't deal exclusively with the Holocaust, but genocides in general) and while I haven't taken it, I'm sure the Armenian genocide is dealt with.

BTW, what is all this about a Greek genocide? Someone link me.

Are you saying that NimChief is of turkish extraction? That would explain a lot.

It really doesn't help to deny it within the Turkish borders while everybody else outside Turkey knows about it. If Turkish children don't learn about it in school then once they become adults they are in an awkward situation the moment they meet people outside Turkey who bring up the subject.

I can understand the shock of being exposed to such thing all of a sudden (I've seen once the reaction of some Hungarian tourists when they visited some famous turistic places in Transylvania and by mistake came across the memorials dedicated to the Romanian peasants massacred by the Hungarian army and police between 1940-1944 during several campaigns of ethnic cleansing). The Turks of today are of course not guilty of what happened more than 80 years ago and comming to terms with such a thing is not easy. However stubborn denial inspite of all the evidence is doing lots of damage to the reputation of both the individuals and of the Turkish people in general.

well, thats ignorant. Though there are alot of people that think that. It was,and well wasnt in the same since. This is alot closer to a war than a genocide though. The turks started killing them once they decided that they had had enough of the pointless killings that the armainens had commited, so they felt like the only way to end it was to kill as many as they could.

What pointless killings are you referring to?

Regardless, there aren't enough justifications for genocide.

According to this book http://www.jewishracism.com/JewishGenocide.pdf, Talaat Pasha, Djavid Bey, Ataturk, and other Ottoman figures who were responsible for the Armenian Genocide were just another Jewish Zionists who were bent on destroying Otoman Empire in the pursuit of the establishment of Israel ...

Just read the book with open mind and take your own conclusion. Remember do not complain to me for its content.

While many do demonise the Turks, which is wrong, I would go the route of TreffdatTornet and fight against any perpetuation of the stereotype.

I am very sure it happened. There's too much evidence pointing towards it. Persecutions happened all across the Aegean during the period, and it was a major battle ground during the first world war. The Armenian (and hellenic) genocide was yet more madness in the aftermath of the great war.

The Armenians are a proud people, and I very much doubt they'd lie about this, even if they hated the Turks as much as they did. Remember various persecutions happened under the Ottomans too, and those arn't denied.

I recommend anyone interested listens to some of the Axis of Justice pod-casts:

    http://www.axisofjustice.org/audio/a...ceradio47a.mp3 (Part 1)

    http://www.axisofjustice.org/audio/a...ceradio47b.mp3 (Part 2)

If anyones a massive left winger and music fan (of any fairly modern- as in the last 40 or so years, including rock, hip-hop etc), I heartly recommend listening to the rest of their pod-casts. They're enlightening stuff.

Happened, but doesn't warrant the greeks getting back Istanbul or Western Anatolia. I say this as I've witnessed more than enough nationalism here with people eyeing getting back istanbul.

If anybody here thinks it is fake I have a large archive of pictures of the victims of the Armenian genocide. I am a history major and thus I feel it is my duty to defend the truth no matter how many people are offended or disagree with me.

People who think its fake will always argue with the pictures. Why else would holocaust deniers exist?

Its sad that this happened to the Armenians, but genocide seems to be common in the world so they are not alone.

It really irks me that people like NimChief are compelled to post blatant lies on subjects like this.
