Default No preferences folder upon install?

Hello, I just got a new laptop for Christmas : ) I installed the version of RS 2 which I last had on my other laptop which was RS 2 patched to 2.1a

I then loaded my saved game which I had transferred over from the other computer via a usb stick and found that there wasn't either a preferences folder or a saves folder for my faction, Rome.

I transferred from my old laptop the preferences folder and the saves folder and then tried to have a battle with reinforcements. In that saved preferences folder, the preferences text file had unlimited men on battlefield to true and yet my reinforcements wouldn't come.

Also, I saved my game and gave it a new name and then exited out. However, no new saves were listed in the transferred over except the save I had already transferred over. Yet when I went to play the game again it was selectable on the loading screen?

What's going on here? Any ideas?

There won't be a preferences folder or a save folder until you launch the game (or that install) for the first time.

One thing we suggest is to install on a 'working copy' (i.e. the game has been run before) is for that very reason. Even if you copy the game to a new location after it's been launched for the first time it will retain all your settings - the only ones you will lose is any special control keys.

If you can't see the saves in the folder but you can see them in-game it sounds like you've either installed to the program files folder (which we suggest not doing) or you've not turned off UAC (or both).

My guess is that the saves etc will be in the 'virtual store' or 'appdata' area. This is a hidden folder so you will have to go into your folder options and allow 'hidden folder and files' to be shown.

The 'appdata' area can be found by running %appdata% and then following the logical path.

My guess is it will be something like 'C:\USERS\"useraccount"\AppData\Roaming\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War'.

So in order for the folder to appear I would need to play a Rome campaign then? About how far into the campaign should I play for this folder to appear?

As soon as you start a campaign the preferences, saves etc folders are created. No need to even press 'end turn'.

My guess is that as soon as you change some options in-game the preferences folder (and files) will be there.

By launching the game you will also get the save folder as well - which is the reason I suggested starting a campaign.
