Immediately block the path to the next island with your ship so they cannot attack you.
before you attack the isu destroy the amako to the north. Then use a Missionary to incite revolts in the rest of the provinces on Kyushu. That way you can march in and take a province without declaring war. also try to get an alliance wit hthe mori or chosokabe if you can.
Thanks to zhiphius and Ceorl84 for their aid in previous posts as they were on Legendary in their posts. Currently I'm working on "Hard". Your mileage may vary depending on your difficulty.
Do the following on turn one.
1) Using your matchlock kobaya block the straight between Bizen and the mainland. You'll need to deal with the Ouchi at some point, but you want to limit your opponents to one if you can help it. (zhiphius)
2) Build yari ashigaru from Bizen. (zhiphius)
3) Put your missionary in Bungo and remove ALL of your forces from there and move on to Bizen. (Ceorl84)
4) Offer Military Access for 10 turns to the Sagara to secure an alliance. This is important to do your best to isolate the Shimazu as much as possible. (Ceorl84)
5) Destroy the Bow Dojo in Bizen. (Ceorl84) Build a Chapel there.
6) Start "Chi" on your way to "Essence of Spirit". Note that as Otomo, you do NOT have access to the mission line, but to the Otomo specific Hospital and Jesuit Building Chain.
7) Adopt your starting General.
8) Optional to build trade ship to capture the nearby node, but your priority is eliminating the Shoni.
The following applies to your early turns:
1) Build yari ashigaru in bizen for next couple of turns. Build one matchlock for the next turn in Bungo for the gun mission. Build two more the next turn and garrison them there.
2) In Autumn and Winter of 1545, sell military access to the Ito and to the Sagara but never indefinite unless you are sure they will die in the next few turns. Use that extra money to buy the upgrade to the Nanban Quarter. Yes you will sacrifice extra accuracy or armor by having them in Bungo, but you get one more unit than you would otherwise.
3) In winter of 1545, gather your forces on the Bizen side of the border with Tsukushi, but do not attack until Spring of 1546. Bring as many matchlock as possible (probably two or three), but at least the two bows you started with. The quick attack will stun the Shoni. Leave enough of a garrison in Bizen and build more if needed to keep order.
4) Don't go too fast, you will likely be attacked by the Shoni who will post superior numbers. Put your matchlocks and bows towards the side they approach. Keep your yari ashigaru behind them in spear wall formation and prepare to engage the Shoni as they reach the castle. You will suffer losses, but if done right, they'll be minimal. Making an opponent attack you gives you the advantage of position as they HAVE to fight you in order to win, you don't need to fight them to win.
3) Once the Shoni are repelled, take care of any scragglers and pounce on the all-but-defenseless Hizen. Again, leave a garrison to keep peace in Tsukushi, especially since you need to convert them to Christianity. With this the Shoni should be eliminated.
4) Deal with Kyushu as you see fit but keep a boat in the straight, eventually a Nanban trade ship there and at least a kobaya if not another trade ship just outside of Bungo to control entry of hostiles into that bay. Abuse missionaries to make revolts and eventually take control of the island. Agents are sometimes more effective than troops in this matter, since both of the remaining clans are "friendly".
5) After Essence of Spirit, head towards Equal Fields, then Strategy of Defence, Tea Ceremony depending on your honor, and then Chonido. Then it's a choice from there on the religious line or the firearms line. Your pick. (Ceorl84)
Good luck!
Current Date - Winter 1564 - Hard/Long Campaign
As you can see, the campaign is going rather well.
Slow going is necessary with a Christian clan, especially the Otomo, but as you can see, agents have their uses. The Chosokabe are my allies and have remained so through realm divide. The Honma and Takaoka are my vassals (through diplomacy). My metsuke are home in the richer provinces giving higher taxes. I had as much as 170000 gold but that faded away with realm divide, though I maintained a profit throughout.
The Oda were eliminated solely through the use of agents during this year. They were the largest empire at 19 territories... "WERE" being the operative word.
The Takeda lost a few territories due to agents, as they remain the second largest empire.
The only other remaining clan is the Date. Oh, and the puny Ashikaga Shogunate.
Not many players left as you can see.
Minor mistake was taking two last territories so I had Realm Divide instead of taking Kyoto. As you can see, this is purely survivable given the circumstances. Agents, especially Christian Missionaries specialized for Inciting Riots, are devastating if used with ninja specialized for sabotaging armies.:
Pah, slowgoing is for the weak willed! My fun little start for a vanilla Otomo legendary game (no military access trading except to get military access self-rule):
Turn 1:
Set Tea Ceremony as the research target.
Place missionary in Bungo.
Build chapel in Bungo.
Build trade ship in Bungo. Continue this on every turn.
Build spear ashigaru in Buzen
Move all units from Bungo towards Buzen castle
Move bow kobaya towards some trade node you'd like to have (like the horses in center north), or blockade the strait with it if you want (not necessary yet, Ouchi won't come attack you within the first few turns, and a single bow kobaya won't stop them because they almost always have 2-3 ships come over to attack the strait)
Turn 2:
Build spear ashigaru in Buzen
Build spear ashigaru in Bungo (this'll help with something next turn...).
Move trade ship towards some node you'd like from Bungo. Repeat as they come out.
Move the units midway between Bungo and Buzen towards Buzen, but rather than giving a straight move order to the castle, make them just follow the road all the way next to the castle. Now select everyone except the general in that stack and move those units into the castle. Then move the general left outside into the castle. What one wouldn't do to get 1 meter farther in a single turn!
Swap your general to a minister of finance
Start building harbor in Buzen
Turn 3:
Move missionary from Bungo towards Buzen (can't get there in one turn). The one spear levy built on turn 2 was necessary because otherwise Bungo would go to -1 happiness.
Leave 2 units at Buzen (your choice, I prefer leaving 2 bow ashigaru) and make the rest attack Tsukushi. You'll get ambushed by the AI near the castle, beat the ambush.
Move as close to the castle as you can get, then detach (1) general from the stack and siege the castle. Capture the town.
Build an ashigaru unit in Buzen
Turn 4:
Start building market in Tsukushi.
Start building spear ashigaru in tsukushi.
Move missionary into Tsukushi
Move as many units as you can out of Buzen without it going into negative happiness into Tsukushi
Start building a bow kobaya from the harbor in Buzen.
Turn 5:
Attack Hizen with whatever amount of units you feel you need. If you can balance things out so Tsukushi stays on positive happiness, good, but not really needed. Take the province.
Build an ashigaru unit in Tsukushi, in Buzen if you feel like it.
Move the bow kobaya into the strait next to Buzen castle.
Start building more bow kobayas or medium bunes to add to the strait.
Now you're at 4 provinces on turn 5 and you're only at war with a faction that won't attack you for a while (except at sea). Sagara will declare war in a couple of turns, and if Ito has managed to get themselves killed Satsuma will as well. Sagara tends to be pretty easy to deal with just by having one general in Bungo with a couple of units and your main army in Tsukushi, hanging around the border of their province. Keep an agent in their province, then when they declare war and start moving towards you, just move in from the opposite direction and take their castle.
hi guys,
the otomo clan sounds very interessting. is it worth to buy it? are the portugese units strong enough to fight against the samurais?
You can (if you choose to) play Otomo quite differently than other clans right from the start with the fast imported matchlocks, and Tercios and Blunderbuss cavalry are (especially the latter) quite powerful. Out of all the clan packs so far it's definitely the best.
Many great tips here! Thanks! This should be sticked as theres no Otomo Clan Tips thread sticked right now.
