Default Ati + AMD = DAAMIT?

I would like to hear (well read actually) peoples' opinions on the merger of Ati and AMD into one company.
I know there was a thread before it happened (ages ago), but I would like to hear what tech heads feel, expect, etc.

Personally I don't like it. Will it cause Intel and NVIDIA to become even closer?
Will amd chips only work with ati video cards and vice versa?
I fear for healthy competition in the hardware industry.

    Ati+AMD=Damnit!

I don't like it either. :nono: I like NVidia and AMD, so I really hope that it won't cause AMD to stop having nForce MoBo's, and so that Ati GPU's are more effective with an AMD than NVidia with AMD.

Well since I have an X1900XT and an AMD athlon 64 X2 AM2, I am pretty happy about this, after all ATI is currently beating nVidia on the GPU market, and AMD athlons are better for games than Pentiums, so its the best from each group merging, whats not to like?

Um, you're completely wrong. Firstly, NVidia is owning Ati on the biggest part, mid priced GPU's. For the same price as an mid priced ati chip you can get a better (more effective) NVidia chip. Secondly, NVidia is still holding the most effective GPU.

And about CPU's, Intel has released it's Core 2, and the 2 most effective, one that costs over 1000€/$, one that is a bit over 500€/$, both are far more effective than AMD's most effective, FX62, which costs over 1000€/$.

Well after reading this article about AMD dropping ATI name and just have AMD graphic cards

Really am more of Nvidia and AMD guy but if is better for the customer i see it as a good thing

Well, it should provide cheaper chips, as AMD will have something to do with retired fabs for once, HOWEVER, in a field with extremely smaller number of companys as it is, I don't like mergers.

Well great. Wish this happened a year ago, on account of I bought a compy with an ATi graphics processor (x800XL, handles Oblivion nicely on rather high settings), and I have a 3500+ AMD 64-bit...all in all the graphics card and monitor jumped the price up something like 400-500 dollars.

Of course, you can't actually buy those core 2s, so you will have to forgive me for ignoring them at the moment.

Also, in the biggest sector of chips (100-200), AMD still have the better BUYABLE chips.

Umm yeah.. you can buy core 2s. I have one on my list for the pc I’m going to build in a few months.

I'm not to sure about this mind you i have never used a AMD processor or an ATI graphics cards its always been Intel and Nvidia for me.

Really? You can buy Core 2s? can't find them anywhere on the internet. The big retailers are not even LISTING them.

NCIX has them...same with ZZF or Newegg, just they don't have any in stock right now.

Newegg don't have them, as of yesterday, not even listed.
Most of the rest is listed as pre-order at NCIX, meaning that you can't actually buy the bloody thing.
Also, at the mid range, they get trounced at price for performance.......

What's your version of mid range? Mine is the E6400 & E6600, which trounces the AMD line of CPUs currently. Of course, right now is not a good time to buy with the price gouging...$460 for E600? Supposed to be $316.

In a few months it should all be good with demand settling down & Intel increasing production of them.

316 is midrange? For me, that is 100-200.....

Mid range is maybe 150-250, high 250-500, ultra high the fastest possible... ? I think (for me)

    eh...

My opinion on the matter can be summed up with two words: 64-bit GPU.

Why in the world would a 64 bit GPU do any good? I rather have a few more pipes, myself.

Mid range is maybe 150-250, high 250-500, ultra high the fastest possible... ? I think (for me)
In that range, with the current prices and the BUYABLE cpus, AMD trouced Intel.

Here is the CPU I'm putting in the PC I'm building next month. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...512&CatId=2397

Congrats. Intel is now ruling in the high end realm.
