Thread: Game Crash when changing from Campaign to Battle

So I built a brand new computer that's pretty amazing. There isn't a game circa 2012 I can't play at max settings. I did a clean install of RTW, and downloaded RSII 2.5. It works wonderfully. Well, at least when I'm in the campaign map. When I attempt to play a battle on the map, however, the game insta-crashes. No loading screen, no attempt to switch from Campaign map to the battle map; straight up crash and back to Windows I go.

    Anyone else have this issue?

Please don't point me to a thread and tell me to scour 140 pages for the answer. I appreciate those of you who have done that, but I only get about 30-60 minutes a day on my computer and/or the internet, so I have to maximize that time. There's no need to uninstall and reinstall the game either, as that's been done 47 times too many.

Again, the game works great at any setting, but I like my games pretty. That's why I bought and built it myself. It's the only game (or mod, for that matter) where this issue arises. I am looking for answers, not questions that I have to continually come back and read. I know that sounds brash, but I just have limited time to come in here and/or play my games.

    Thanks in advance!

    TECH DETAILS:

Installed the game on C:\Program Files(x86)\Activision, but then made a copy on C:\Games\ specifically for Roma Surrectum II. No problems with the install or launching the game. I don't get an End Turn CTD. I have patched to 2.5, and also have the Hillfort patch. No in-game issues.

    I have an Intel Core i7-3930K, 32gb DDR3, GTX670, 256SSD.

Graphics options are all set to highest for the most part. When I first encountered this problem, however, I tried turning vegetation down, shadows down, unit size, etc. Nothing has changed the results when switching from campaign to battle map.

    I use Windows 7.

I do not play it on Steam.

I installed RTW and BI from their original CD's, and Alex was downloaded from their website. All versions are fully patched and updated.

Screen resolution is the same for campaign and battle maps.

I am not receiving an error message. I am just being kicked back to Windows the moment I select "fight battle on map" instead of auto-calculating the battle.

    I'd start: here.

It is a Technical Help thread - you need to supply technical details.....

The game engine dates from 2004 - it won't make the best use of modern CPUs or GPUs.

Make sure the screen resolution is the same for the campaign and battle maps.

OK - it seems that you've followed the details shown here - can you confirm unit shaders are set properly (on)?

If they are the next thing to do is to turn all settings to the minumum and then play a battle (it will look awful). This will show if you can play battles or not.

Personally, I installed the game to my own folder and it's never seen the program files folders.

The theory is that your PC should be able to handle the game easily. However, it probably does not make much use of the GTX670 ( I have a EVGA Geforce GTX670 FTW - 2Gb GDDR5 and Intel Core i7 Extreme processor 975(3.33GHz,8MB L2 cache,6.4GT/sec) with 6Gb of 1067MHz DDR3 Tri-Channel).

    I play at 2560x1600 resolution.

How much memory do you have?

I'm only playing at 1920x1080; a single 24" for now. Looking to get a couple more (and another gpu) in the near future.

I have 4gb video memory, and 32gb desktop memory. Well, I'm only running 16gb in there now, but I have another 16gb.

Okay, so now the game launches the music, but to a black screen. And I didn't change anything yet...
