    Default Unit flags disappeared on the battle map

    I just installed patch 3.2 and this is the issue I'm having. The flags don't show up for my forces or the opponents when in a battle. The campaign map is fine.

    The battles look like absolute chaos with little men everywhere and no idea who they belong to. If anyone could help me that'd be great.

    I went into the preferences file and there doesn't seem to be a line for "banner" ..

    Thanks a lot.

    Might I also add that I went into the folder: Medieval II Total War\mods\Third_Age_3 and then opened the .cfg file.

    I found a line that says banner = 0 and tried to change the value to 1 but it says access denied.. any ideas?

    To be perfectly clear, you went into this file right?

    data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign = show_banners = TRUE

    If you still can't get it on and you have the normal UI for commands, you can click the faction button inside of the unit actions and your troops as well as the enemies will flash their respective colours.

    imperial_campaign is a folder, not a file.. perhaps you forgot to complete that sentence?
    but like I said the campaign map is fine, it's just the battles

    i thought of clicking the flashing thing but it's a huge pain having to do it over and over

    Nah, I got it confused with something else. I don't have this mod installed anymore so I can't help you that much, but there might be two difference preferences files. One in the medieval folder, and one in the Third Age Folder.

    In any case, try the instructions in this link: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...93#post5879093

    Do you have that file set to read only? Is the file currently in use by another program?

    The read only option is unchecked. It just says access denied.. quite strange.

    That's alright man thanks for the help.

    Go to your ..\SEGA\M2TW\ medieval2.preference .CFG file, open it with notepad, find the line:

    show_banners = 0, change 0 to 1. Save and exit.
    If you can't save it, then turn UAC off (if you have Win Vista or 7).

    In \Sega\Medieval 2\medieval2.preference.CFG this is all that's in the document

    The specific preference file in the Third Age mod folder directory does have the banner line but it says access denied whenever I try to change it.

    Do you have Windows 7, 8 or Vista?

    If you do, first disable UAC (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...59#post8287059) go to section `How to fix it` and apply step 3.
    Then go to Virtual store and delete Medieval 2 Total War folder C:\ Users\ [user name or your PC`s name]\ AppData\ Local\ VirtualStore\ Program Files(x?)\ (if u can`t find it, then it is hidden, so follow this How to Unhide hidden folders on Windows: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showt...59#post8287059).

    BUT before deleting that Medieval 2 Total War folder, check is there any saves folder in it( and in \mods\ Third_Age_3) and if are there, make a backup somewhere of any saves folder so that later you can just copy paste saves folder back to C: Program Files(x ?)\ SEGA\ Medieval 2 Total War\ mods\ Third_Age_3 folder.

    Then, start your M2TW game ( so not TATW or Kingdoms, but M2TW), and just start any campaign, and after that exit the game. This will make you a fresh medieval2.preference file.

    And then you can check again for show_banners = 0, change 0 to 1.

    All I had to do was use the step 3 that you gave and then the file became modifiable! so thanks.

    However I then changed it to 1 and all of the small banners showed up on the battlefield however I was hoping for the big ones? like the ones above the cities on the campaign map. It's nice to see them flashing when a unit routs.

    Could you post some screenshots of these small flags you say you got working? If your PrintScreen doesn't work, find Fraps, a small free program for taking ingame screenshots.

    I'm on a different PC but this should suffice.

    Below are the flags that I want, the flags that you have in RTW and MTW2 for example when you are in a battle.

    And below is what my battles look like. I have all of those little flags/banners but not the big ones that flash when a unit routs for example. The tiny banners do nothing and are hard to see when there are hundreds of soldiers clashing.

    As I can see from your last picture, you have the small banners ( the banner carrier ot the left holds it) and you have those that are little bigger in the middle of the unit as well?
    I have them like that too:

    Hm, this looks good. I saw a guy posted that he got them working by getting rid of the spaces in show_banners = 1 (medieval2.preference .CFG file found in ..\SEGA\ Medieval 2 Total War folder).
    First, make a backup of this medieval2.preference .CFG file in case you screw up !

    So, instead of:
    show_banners = 1

    he has put:
    show_banners=1

    Save and Exit.

    After you save this text change, right mouse click on medieval2.preference .CFG file and go to Properties, and set Attributes to Read-Only. This way your text change won`t go away every time you start another TATW or M2TW game.

    Hope this works.

    EDIT: There is a submod for these big banners but works only for TATW 3.2, check it out here.
