If you edit the right preferences.txt file then there can't be a problem with the wrong resolution... Just don't change it anymore when you're in the options menu... Since the game will still say that the max is less than what you put in the preferences.txt...

Yeah, are you sure you're editing preferences.txt in the mods folder and not vanilla?

I prefer to set my screen resolution without having to muck around in text files, so I do it from the Video Options screen itself.



All you have to do is activate Show Advanced Settings and click on the Custom button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen - this will ensure that all the screen resolutions that your monitor can support will be loaded. Then go to the Battle Map and Campaign Map Resolution drop down menus and select the appropriate setting for your screen.
