Will invasions of Dol Guldur continue for rest of game once they start?

I'm just wondering if, when Sauron orders an invasion of Dol Guldur after i've taken it from him, will he just keep ordering new invasions for the rest of the game if the first one fails? Or will i get any breathing space? Is there any number of turns that has to go by between one invasion and the next one being called?

You will get some breathing space and maybe he will order the next on Edoras or Dol Amroth.

Depends on how you do. If you remain the main power, you're bound to be the main target of invasions (for good factions), although the target settlement might vary. The only exception seems to be in case a faction gets excommunicated.

So maybe the best strategy would be to try to weaken and take out some of the weaker evil factions so at least they can't contribute elite armies to invasions?

That, go on the offensive, or the best actually (but a lot would consider it lame or cheating), reload the previous turn and do something else after loading. AI invasions have a random chance of taking place once the AI can call them, so it's possible to dodge all invasions altogether this way.

Also, Dol Guldur has a superb defensive position. You can't really ask for better...

yep it is pretty ideal if you wait for them to besiege and then sally out - so i'll just fight them there and the weaker armies with my other field army to get them experience - and keep reinforcements coming to make up the losses

What I should have said is, I believe the Invasion target is rerolled. 5 in a row at Edoras.. those are some tough dice.

Nah the best strategy is to give the settlement to a good faction that you want to be in war with other evil faction
(I once give a settlement to an evil faction after the call of Sauron but the game Crash)

Nope, Sauron never call invasion on Dul Guldor

So feel free to celebrate when you captured it and free Citadel to pumping out elite units.

He definitely did in my game - and two Haradrim, one Gundabad and two Mordor invading armies showed up there - though it was several turns after i'd taken it before he called the invasion

One way to stop invasions is to block them. For Dol Guldur just make a ring of single stack units around it. The ai don't attack them and just sit their allowing you time to deal with them. Works great with Minas Morgul and Isengard only one way in so one unit of spearman can hold off Ten Thousand.

TBH the game is most enjoyable if you just let the game do its thing. Don't block invading armies, don't let them take the settlement on purpose.

Just hope that the next invasion gets a different target.

I managed to defend MT once until the invasion got cancelled. It was epic and much more enjoyable than just letting them conquer and then retake it. But once as Eriador I had to do it (let them conquer it, announce the end of the invasion and then retake it) because Eriador is very weak early on in the game. It all depends on your mood and on your resources.

Nothing wrong with the "abandon a settlement with the intent of recapturing it later" strategy. Happened all the time in real life.

Just make sure you give the "I shall return" speech before you leave.

It's fine to give an epic speech before the battle, provided they don't have catapults, because then you are asking for a lucky shot to crunch your general.
