An instagram account was created by a female teenager to bring shame onto "orrar" (based on Turkish word for whore which sounds similar to a kind of bird in Swedish). Essentially people could submit images and descriptions of people they wanted to defame and other people could comment on them. This escalated and more than 200 young people aged 12-19 were exposed and insulted on the site.

According to the rumours the girl managing the account accidentally exposed herself by posting a profile picture to the wrong account. To protect herself she then released personal information on people who had submitted "whores" to the site but this backfired spectacularily as a mob was assembled by a Facebook event to confront her in school. The girl who created the account seems to have gotten away unharmed but another girl accused of posting images was beaten up by the mob which consisted of exposed people, friends and relatives as well as "hangers on".

I really like the internet as a free arena but this really creates two questions.

1) How to protect people as young as 12 years from being portrayed as "whores" on the internet.

2) How to ensure that flash mobs created by internet events are prevented from turning into riots and mob justice. According to the police only 15-20 had displayed a violent behaviour but the full mob was estimated to more than 150 people which cause issues as the police need to deal with them and secure the school.

Good idea. We also need judges who actually apply the law and dish out prison sentences. Just because people are young doesn't mean they shouldn't be punished for evil deeds. The judiciary has to protect the people, and more specifically the innocent, not the criminals. And generally speaking, the state(s) should force internet corporations to be more careful with personal data of their citizens.

This also indicates that she comes from a bit of a ghetto lifestyle because I've never heard anyone else use that kind of slang regardless of background.

Why surveillance ? You could also say that the police only arrives after a murder is over, it makes no sense.

My preference would be to have people personal firearm (but hey not the thread), but if these "youth" were arrested and jail for mobbing people then they would fear to go in broad daylight do it.

I can't understand how forcing corp to "protect info" would have worked here, because any picture you put on facebook can be saved on your HD and people with camera will take pictures. The only personal info that was revealed here was the instagram account holder by her own fault, quite all around ironic.

The problems wasn't lack of surveilance, the problem is that many of those kids that saw the Facebook page were not morally sensitive enough to think that beating up someone was a bad idea.

I'm not sure we can. We can attempt to prosecute perpetrators (and even be successful) but I don't think we can put the genie back in the bottle. This is the issue of social responsibility and human civility. Authorities can't really prevent this kind of behaviour just as they cannot prevent bullies from stealing lunch money off smaller kids.

Again, the issue is that of social responsibility, not control. We can't technically prevent this sort of occurrence without a deep change in how we see society and its freedoms. We can certainly be reactive but in general you simply cannot prevent people from being impulsive, violent and displaying crowd mentality without mind control. From the point of view of authority you are condemned to being reactive. The only way to work on this is to increase social awareness and generally incentivise people to be... kind.

Not really surprising that moral crusading on the internet, and social media in especial, eventually would lend itself to mob justice. It's disgusting in an awkward sort of way: I really do not appreciate the behaviour of the girl who posted the information on the web but the people who gathered in "support" (in reality just an excuse for violent behaviour) somehow make me cringe even more.

I think it has to do with the way the fast spread of information on the internet promotes poorly planned decisions. Posts can be written in such a neatly summarized way that something as delicate as this is quickly turned into a witch-burning situation, and once the ball starts to roll people will get more or less permanently stuck to the mass of idiocy that slowly accelerates downhill.

Oh, and as Adar pointed out, this discussion is not about demographics.
