Default Problems starting M2TW on windows 8 laptop

I installed the Kingdoms pack a couple days ago and it worked great for a couple of days, but now whenever I try to start M2TW, an error comes up that says this application is not compatible with the installed operating system, please upgrade to windows 98se, 2000 or better. Sorry if this has been answered before, I'm just not sure how to fix this. Thanks!

So you have a Win8 laptop - correct? The Kingdoms mods worked for a few days then started throwing that error message? Strange that it worked for a few days before telling you to upgrade from Win8 to Win98se or 2k. Usually upgrading means moving from the current product to the latest product and not to an OS over a decade old....

Please navigate to your Kingdoms folder and find the file [kingdoms.exe]. Right-click on it and choose [Properties]. Select the [Compatibility] tab. Find the option to force compatibility to [Windows XP (SP3)] and click the radio button on. Then try to load the game. Hopefully it works for you. If not let us know. Good luck!

I got the game to work by changing the UAC slider to to its lowest setting, the message doesn't pop up anymore and the game works fine now. I'm not sure how changing that setting will affect the rest of my computer's performance, but for now the game is working again. Thanks for the help!

It looks like I spoke too soon. Now when I insert the disc and try launch any one of the Kingdoms programs, it says that there is no disc detected in the drive. I'm gonna go look and see if there are any solutions posted in the other threads, but that's the latest update on this situation :/

    Disabled the UAC is good.
Have you set the icons to "Run as Administrator" and "XP Compatible"?
Is your dvd's firmware updated to Win 8?

What is the brand and model of your computer if prebuilt or motherboard if custom built?

I had the same problem as js0209 and was able to play after performing a Clean Boot by following the directions here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

The next time I played, I had to clean boot again, but the 3rd time it worked normally.

This is my own recent experience with this same problem of my computer claiming that I needed to upgrade to Windows 7 or even Windows 98 (even though I have Windows 8.1): I disabled the UAC. It didn't fix the problem. I did the VirtualStore thing as suggested. It didn't fix the problem. I already had all my mods and game located outside of Program files, so that was never a problem to begin with. It wasn't until I updated my HP Intel graphics or whatever with some sort of "chip set" update, plus a few other updates I forced manually (instead of relying on automatically) that the game FINALLY worked. Really? WTF? A stupid update caused all of this? I hate you, Bill Gates. I really, really hate you and Steve Jobs owns you. Macintosh would have never delivered me this headache. Then again most games aren't available for Mac, so Microsoft has me by the balls.
