As the title says how do you free up or create more RAM. I am trying to install a game and it says I need at least 514 MB of RAM. Just wondering what I should do and if one of you guys can help out.![]()

Well, if you dont have 512 (which I assume you made a mistake) you'll need to buy more RAM, and put it into your computer, as RAM is hardware.
Or you are referring to Virtual Memory in which case: Control Panel>System>Advanced>Virtual Memory>Advanced (I think, I'm on Linux atm)

ram is physical, hardware, you have to buy more, page file space won't help if you don't have enough ram and page file space is on your hard drive which slower.
Windows loves to guzzle RAM, so it still helps.

Turn of all windows useless tasks and even their stupid graphical options and it runs better. But the page file does help, but if you don't have enough ram for a game the page file won't help.
That sounds like something that could help me as well, but being a complete Luddite, I've no idea how to do it. I assume I need to bring up the tak manager and start ending processes, but which ones should I be killing?Originally Posted by Aristocrat
Company of Heroes Beta? Without 512 ram, you would never make it into an online game. Loading would be brutal. As it is, I hate waiting for players to catch up with me before a battle.
Yeah, time to get at least 512 more ram to make a gig. Ram is relatively cheap now. I remember needing at least a gig of ram back when Planetside was first released. That was years ago, youre way behind the times in computer terms.
No, only slow DDR RAM is cheap now, any decent kind of RAM (DDR2 800) is actually quite expensive, the last time I checked I was going to be £300 for a Gig of suitable RAM.Originally Posted by BulletproofTurban

I've only got 512 MB as well. Games work fine though - I can get large unit scale on RTW. I really should get some more, bu I'll think I'll just wait 'till I get a new PC.
you could try some kind of memory manager to clean up 'leaks'. FreeRAMXP pro works decent. I have, however found that for me (I have 2gb in my system, cant stand tiny amnts of ram) it causes more slowdown then it helps.

just open the task manager

but be care full of some processes which can cause undesirable results
and never end windows explorer

Out of curiosity, which game is asking for 1024 MB RAM? You can set virtual memory by changing your pagefile.sys file under system options. To speed up windows and prevent it from draining RAM, turn off Indexing & Automatic Updates (remember to do it yourself once in a while) under services.msc (go to Start.. Run... and type services.msc). Also turn off System Restore:As the title says how do you free up or create more RAM. I am trying to install a game and it says I need at least 514 MB of RAM. That should help your memory problem a bit. If the game keeps asking you have no choice but to buy new hardware and install it (which is relatively easy).
"in montem soli non loquitur" basically means that you should not argue against what is obvious.

I use Cacheman, not sure how much it works though. Maybe a frame or two (I have 512).
Thanks guys, I will try what Suns has suggested, and yes my computer is kind slow but it has nevered bothered me before, I just learn to live with it.Originally Posted by sunsmountain
