The Second Faction Reveal is Now Live

I do not have a single faction-based Christmas pun to work into this: so without further ado, it’s time for the next faction reveal!

    http://wiki.totalwar.com/w/Factions

Please bear in mind that the information and imagery on this page show work-in-progress Total War: Rome II™ content, and may be subject to change.

The maps on the faction pages are an artistic representation of a tiny slice of the campaign map (which we won’t be talking about for a while).

    Let the theory-crafting begin!

As I said in the other thread very nice. Good that we have the obvious second out of the way, now it gets
    even more exciting.

Heres hoping that all the greek and diadochi factions will be as extensive and thought-out as the main factions like Rome.

8 Factions leaves me hoping that there will be a "Greek" main faction, split up into smaller leagues and city-states that the player can choose from to get his campaign going.

I hope its the same with the Diadochi Faction, split up into its successors like the Seleucid Empire, Ptolemaic Empire, Pontus, etc...

    Good reveals so far. :3

Carthage owns ALL of the North African coastline? Eugh ¬_¬

Bar that, the phalanx-style formation looks bloody epic. Bit of a hybrid of the Macedonian phalanx and the classical Greek one, isn't it?

Thats an interesting historical point of view. Indeed it is.

Seems to be. Why they did not reveal the names of the three? However, Rome and Carthage fit more to this scheme than other cultures do. Its to early to generalize.

Thats rather unlikely. I do not see how this family-system which fits to Rome and Carthago, should work for the Diadochs. Perhaps, if you directly start with a civil war in turn 0. But thats then rather 3 factions with the same roster; which sounds weird, too.

Interesting enough, that they call it a democratic system.

There is not so much revealed yet, and even if they are done with the factions in 6 weeks from now, just a small fraction of the important information is revealed. I expect articles about the recruitment-system, government-system, political-system, the diplomacy system, a detailed description of all 8 rosters, the user interface, and .... and .... and ....

It is indeed weird to give Carthage the control of the African Coast up to the "Columns of Hercules".

Historically speaking, Carthage only controlled a very small part of Africa. The rest was at the hands of the Numidian kingdoms. And actually, Numidia was the prime power in Northwestern Africa at this time. Numidia's various switches of alliances played a prominent role in the Punic Wars. And after the wars, the Numidian king Jugurtha became one of Rome's fiercest foes.

Besides, if CA had surrounded Carthage by Numidian territories (as in actual history), it would have set a better challenge for would be carthaginian players. With the current plans, the game will be too easy ...

Didn't Numidia only come into existance in around 202 B.C.,. The game starts around 270 B.C.,.

One question to the specialists: were all the carthaginians units dressed with white colours?

No. The Numidian tribes (the Maesulians and the Masaeasily) already controlled Northern Africa at that time.

One has to bear in mind that Carthago was mainly a naval power by that time. They didn't invest much in land expansion until the Barcids attempted the conquest of Hispania). And even when they did conquer lands (in coastal Sicily or Sardinia for instance), it was mainly aimed at securing their trade routes.

Carthago was a city-state, not a land based empire. And they did not have any incentive to exercise a direct control over the poor Numidian lands in NW Africa. It would have been a waste of time for them. And by the way, even Rome did not try to control these areas until late.

So this is rather silly to give Carthage direct control of these lands. They'd better give them an outpost in southern Spain (Cadix). It would be more accurate, and more fun.

I don’t mean any disrespect, but we've not released any information on the campaign difficulty, so until we do there is no way of knowing how hard each playable faction will be to master.

No offense. My mistake. I should have said that "the game might be less challenging, strategically speaking".

There is indeed quite a difference between having one's capital surrounded by potential enemies and having it bordered by colonial provinces.

Sorry for the grammar and verbal mistakes. I am not a native English speaker.

So this time Carthage will not start with a foothold in Iberia? Well I guess that will mean Carthage does not have to deal with an annoying 3 front war this time.

Will CA do you plan to implement internal politic for Carthage to similar level on Rome ? The preview is unclear on it and only mention the democratic system for a happiness bonus.

Nothing I can say on that for the time being, but I will say that we'll be paying close attention to the Carthage and how we can bring their feel into the campaign.

Could you at least say if the scope of playing each faction will be roughly the same? Or will there be major factions where you have more gameplay options than with other factions in terms of choice and management?

I imagine the 8 playable factions will all be major powers (not a small Gallic tribe with one village ) so that choices like the three Roman families or Carthaginian sub-factions will actually make sense.

Wow. 3 major political powers when I expected just 2... # ways of playing Rome, 3 ways of playing Carthage.. That's already 6. By the time I finish them then new DLC/expansion being release. How am I going to play the other 6 (x3) factions ?
