Default The Mayan Calender: Will the world end in just 6 years?

After reading the following article, which examines both Christian and Mayan religious prophecies, I am a little disturbed. Considering that the calender is the most accurate ever devised, and that the events in the Book of Revelation are extremely similer to the events in the Mayan Popal Vuh, I have to ask this question. Will the world end, (or change for the way worse) in the next few years?

    http://www.aztlan.net/the_last_pope.htm

Note that the article is extremely biased toward Christianity.

EDIT: its also a little old, it was made just after John Paul II's death.

    Precisely.

The earth will end in several billion years, when the sun goes red-giant or when we get sucked into an approaching black hole.

Can't wait MaximiIian! Personally I'm a little bit unhappy the Mayans didn't believe in Ragnarok as described in Norse Mythology, now that would be interesting.

no it will end 2012 when a huge comet collides with earth and knocks our planet out of its orbit...or something.

still, lets remember the mayan calender is the most accurate calender. Apart from counting days etc it also predicts astronomical events such as passing of comets.

Even if it is predicting anything it would be the end of the world as we know it, which means that simply things would change not that the world would end. They didn't believe the world ended.

I dont trust end of the world myths simply because you basically have to believe in magic. That or rambling crazy people.

Why do we trust a civilization that had no cars, no real medecine practice, no public education. Why do we trust the word of a half naked people notoriously religously zealous who didnt even have sense enough to keep their civilization intact? I think we're smarter than the mayans, lets not look backwards.

edit-Mayan kings used to stab themselves in the scrotum with ceremoinial knives in religous ritual. Come on...their kings did that, no wonder their civilization didnt make it.

They also predicted astrological events such as eclipses a thousand years in advance with remarkable precision.

Yeah, just like the "remarkable precision" the egyptians managed to achieve with the pyramids, and all the myths that sprang up because of that, people saying it couldnt hve been the egyptians that built the pyramids because theyre just too perfect. It was the atlanteans! No, it was the aliens!

Yeah, the mayans excelled in astrology. But they lacked in most every other facet. I dont think we should put too much stock in the words of a civlization that didnt even have sense enough to ensure their own survival.

The reason they perished was out of their control, and that reason was the period of drought that occured around the 600s, and it devastated not just them, but all the other civilizations of Central America of the time. However, I read once that enclaves continued to exist for centuries, one even lasting into 1692 before it died out.

Strange you mention Atlantis... I think that the Egyptians built the Pyramids, but I also believe that there was an Atlantis. Maybe not of that name, but the region described has been examined and many scholars believe that Atlantis was real.

I don't think it's proportions engage the epic, but it is interesting to see that almost every culture, even the Hawaiians, have an Atlantis myth.

And back on topic, the Mayans were unique in that their Doomsday predictions were thousands of years in the future, while most others are in small terms (as in very soon relative to the times)

    Not to mention wheels.

aligned with the center of the Universe

As far as I know, we cannot know the center of anything infinite or with no known dimensions.
Well, if I, Belisarius, the Black Prince, and you all agree on something, I really don't think there can be any further discussion.

I believe current theories peg the universe as spherical (pending more scientific data about the amount of dark matter in the universe though). So, I imagine it is possible to find the center of the universe. Its not really infinite, just expanding. Since we can't find the edges, all we need to do is look at things that are expanding in a similiar fashion. With big bang theory, thats all the matter in the universe moving away from the center at the same speed. Supposedly then, we could guess where the center is with some accuracy. Either way, the Mayans don't have the ability to detect galaxies and clusters of galaxies.

Theres really little point and finding the center though. I guess we could pat ourselves on the back.

I got as far as the bit about the so-called 'prophecies of St. Malachy' and stopped reading there. Those 'prophecies' are a Sixteenth Century hoax attributed to the Eleventh Century Irish bishop. Any article that takes the 'prophecies of St. Malachy' seriously isn't worth treating as anything other than yet another bit of crazy-eyed internet kookery.

    Then there is this bit:

Fr. Martin believed that the Vatican had finally been, after centuries long efforts, infiltrated, at the highest levels, by Satanists in league with Zionists and what he called the “Universal Assembly” that consists of a Masonic group of Western plutocrats and the Illuminati.

Satanists, Zionists, Masons and the bloody Illuminati! But what about the Knights Tempar, Druids and the Martians? Surely they all have to be involved as well.

The only mystery here is why anyone would take this kind of insane ranting seriously ...

As a man of common sense, I have to say no. How would these mayans of ancient days figure out when we're going to go down when Modern science or intellect can not?
