Default Overclocking amd radeon hd 6950

So thats my current video card.

A while back, I downloaded MSI afterburner. When I went to edit my values, they would not go past the factory allowable overclock settings that were in the Catalyst Control Center which are 840/1350 mhz respectively.

Now, I remember having to go into a Config file, change some value from 0 to 1 and paste some sentence in there stating I knew the risk I was taking, blah blah blah.

After doing this, I was able to push my values from 840 up to 1000(never tried going that high) and something like 1350 to 1500(not sure). It allowed me to do this in both MSI afterburner and CCC, so the MSI program kinda went backdoor into the CCC and edited the max allowed OC values.

Now, no matter how little I went over the factory allowed 840/1350 I would get crashes or major instability.

Just recently I read somewhere that you have to edit registry files, in order for MSI afterburner to work properly with Radeon cards, where as with nvidia cards, all you have to do is change the value in the Config file.

Now after all of that, is there a more simple program, that allows GPU overclocking, and is compatible/works well with amd radeon cards??

depends on your GPU honestly MSI cards work great with Afterburner if its a reference card than Sapphire Trixx supports everything with no bs needed for it to work. depends on make and model

to be blunt, its an amd radeon hd 6950. pretty sure that means reference card right? seems like sapphire trix would be my best option as using msi afterburner requires me jumping through hoops

EDIT: So I've used trixx with no problems. Ive overclocked the card past the factory overclock settings to 860/1450, but really onle noticed a 2-3 fps difference in fraps.
I know I can do better, but i'm not really sure I know the limits on this card and wouldnt want to damage it.

cards are fine up to 1.3 volts keep it under 1.25 for long term stability,

best yet set to 1.2v see how far it will go stable, once you find you highest stable clock at that voltage dial back the voltage bit by bit till you find the best clock speed / voltage ratio you can.

yea, i keep seeing people talking about upping the voltage. but there doesnt seem to be a setting for that in trixx. if i go to high i get really bad artifacts even when not gaming, but ive kept the first number under 900 and i get artifacts not just on this page.

first number is core clock there should be a little slider slide it down you should see voltage if you dont your cards not a reference card

ohh, i just saw the power board li. never noticed it slid down more. but more some reason the program in general gives me problems.

just now i turned it on just to see the slider and find the voltage setting then turned it off.
now my screen is flickering/jumping all over the place and i havent even adjusted a setting.

you might be SOL like anything overclocking is luck of the draw, but try reboot then set your settings, disable ULPS as well normally its only ment for crossfire cards but sometimes it can help flickering is usually caused by clock speed jumping from low to high and when overclocked it can be finicky depending on the app used to do the overclocks
