    Default game resolution

    Hi guys,

so I just bought two sweet monitors and currently set their resolution to 1280x720

When I launched RTW immediately I noticed that there was almost an inch cut from the bottom of the screen, meaning that I couldn't see the button that confirms the faction selection at the campaign menu.

Eventually I managed to overcome this by removing the -ne switch line, but while the menu got fixed (it finally showed the 1280x720) the strategy map stayed at 1280x768.

And in the graphics there's no resolution that ISN'T ####x768 (which is beyond my monitor's capacity). Even in the preferences, if I try to put 720 on the strategy may when I load it reverts to 768 automatically.

So, how can I force the strategy map to stay on the 1280x720?

    Thanks

Search for the preferences.txt file in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Rome - Total War\preferences". Note that your directory might be slightly different than mine.

Then open the preferences.txt with notepad and replace the resolution (numbers in red) with whatever you want. Save, restart RTW, and you should be good to go.

    Code:
    STRATEGY_RESOLUTION:1280x720
    STRATEGY_MAX_RESOLUTION:2048x1536
    STRATEGY_32_BIT:TRUE
    BATTLE_RESOLUTION:1280x720

The strategy map doesn't recognize 720. All the resolutions are something x768.

I'm even using XP. The problem could only be the monitors, but what can I do? Might it be because I'm using two monitors at the same time? I'm really out of ideas...

I'm afraid you might be right. Minimum vertical resolution is 768 for the campaign map in RTW. Odd that the minimum for the battle map is 600...

Maybe try the 'Adjust desktop size and position' scaling options in the nVidia control panel?
Or.. if ATI has a similar feature?
    Or..

    Maybe?

After changing resolution numbers in preferences file and saving the changes, right mouse click on that same preference file, go to properties, and at the bottom set to Read-Only. Apply and OK. And give it another try.

Thanks for your input, but it doesn't work... The only way that I can find to fit the screen vertically is to change the width from 1280 to 1024, meaning that the actual game window will be smaller than the screen...

    Damn monitors

Are you sure there isn't another setting with the same aspect ratio you can then have scaled up? You might be better playing with borders though, depending on how low you need to go for it.

See here for a quick guide to screen sizes
