Can't connect to steam, minecraft servers etc (HELP PLS REP FOR ANSWERS!!!!!!)

Hey guys, I really need your help with this!

I am at Malta for my intership but I can't connect to any Minecraft servers or steam. I think it might be an problem with the router of the complex I stay in ... The router is a public WIFI server where you can connect to using an pasword provided to everyone. The connection is very slow but I'm sure you should be able to connect to steam or an MC server. Tough, it doesnt work..

At home I could easily connect to steam and the MC servers so its not an problem with my computer (besides I closed all firewalls and removed my MCafee premium account.. I just want this to work so I can play games again. I am really borred at the moment....

Not sure if Steam or Minecraft gives specific errors when trying to connect (Haven't had problems with either in awhile) but if you received a unique message that should be posted. My advice though would be to put your IP address into the address bar as something in your router is blocking the programs methinks. Try port forwarding, the port for Minecraft is 25565 if you don't know how to port forward just Google search it. As far as I know port forwarding allows the program access to your router which seems to be what you need. The same could probably be done for Steam but I have no idea what port Steam uses. Anyways if that doesn't do anything I have a feeling it's the wireless internet so just poke around in the wireless settings on the router page.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that you use your Internal IP to access your router's web page. Just do cmd in the search bar and type in ipconfig in the command line.

I obviously can't access the router page to change something since I'm not the owner of the router and the internet connection. The owner,European School for English (ESE) won't let me acces it ofc... So, I'm not sure if its eaven possible then to do it..

Contact whoever is in charge of managing the internet. Tbh I suspect that the school may have blocked common gaming applications such as Steam or Minecraft, but you won't know for sure until you contact them.

This is probably what's happening, my college's WIFI has the same issue, it wont let me into steam or minecraft, a good way to keep students busy with what they should be doing

I contacted the reception and they told me the internet was only for basic stuff, skyping, facebook, email etc. I think its the same problem Nerva experienced on his high school, altough it might be differ a bit since its also because of the real slowness of my connection I think.
