It should be noted that all footage shown was originally filmed in black and white and coloured by hand. None of them were originally shot in colour.
Also none of the segments showing infantry "going over the top" or charging/fighting the enemy are real combat footages. They were either shot in the rear in training areas (some of which reproduced complete trench segments) or taken from b&w war movies like "Stoßtrupp 1917" or "Verdun - vision d'histoire" (this famous photo of a French soldier supposedly killed in action is a screenshot from the later movie for instance). Period cameras were rather too fragile and bulky to be taken in action, and more importantly it was forbidden to film or take pictures on the frontline after the 1914 christmas truce made headlines).
The dead at the end are very much real though.

Wow, the color job is unreal!
I recall seeing a documentary on WWI recently (in school) and there was a very slow, haunting clip showing these men charging, one of whom appears to be hit and goes down and flops head over heels and never got back up.
For some reason, it looked too real to be staged.
