    Default Siege problems

So in RTW its really easy to catch rams n stuff on fire. real easy. However in M2TW its impossible to catch anything on fire regardless of the amount of fire arrows fired at it. I ask how do you defeat siege engines in this game that dosent involve moving a cannon or ballista out of your town to fire

I wish I could tell you the exact mechanisms of the game that cause this, but it happens fairly often when I play.

If there is rain, or fog conditions its not going to happen,,, but if the weather is 'fair' or even in an arid landscape - can happen frequently.

I suspect it has something to do with the quality of your army, and the Traits / Quality of your General... plus the quality (or lack of) in the enemy army, and the enemy commander.

ballista or cannon towers will shatter them.

Also, use trebuchet or if you have them, mortars.

It is harder to ignite siege engines in M2TW, but not impossible. To have a decent chance, you need at least two units of archers per siege engine.

Improved towers, however, are quite capable of destroying siege engines by themselves.

how does one improve tower? or does this just happen as you build and upgrade your city?

When settlement reaches certain level (large city/fortress I think) there will be a building available, ballista towers. After gunpowder event, huge cities and citadels with ballista towers built can upgrade them further to cannon towers.

Archers aren't very good at setting things on fire in this game. Usually, it if happens, it is the towers that get the job done. So build some ballista towers and watch their rams burn.

There are many strategies included for defeating siege towers etc before they get to the walls in the Medieval Total War 2 Settlements and Siege Guide You might like to take a look. Note that you can't use ladders against a Huge City and for settlements with stone walls, ballistas are only do significant damage against their doors. If you use just a few siege devices against a city/fortress equipped with ballista towers and a reasonable garrison you won't see any of the siege devices get to the walls. Remember also that the city towers won't shoot if they don't have a friendly unit on the wall next to, or behind them.

Why can't you use ladders in a Huge City? Enlighten me.

The walls are too high and CA was too lazy to make a longer ladder for huge cities, but they did a different siege tower skin.

Possibly the ladders would be too heavy for the troops, or maybe they'd have to script more men per ladder for these occasions.

I never actually realized that. When the game gets to this phase, I either storm the settlement with artillery on the first turn, or lay siege to draw out and destroy enemy field army.
