Default Night Goblins Firing in Melee?

I just conducted a siege assault against Night Goblins as the Dwarves. Much to my dismay I found that the Night Goblin archers would continue to fire their arrows at melee range while my dwarves were fighting the first rank. The arrows would fire straight, through the models of the front ranks, and completely slaughtered my troops.

I watched as 1 Night Goblin Arrow unit fighting a unit of Slayers in melee completely destroyed the slayers, and 4 units of warriors stacked up behind them.

How can I end the unit files to prevent this from happening in the future?

I can confirm this happened to me as the dwarves as well but in a field battle, I just went out of shield wall and move commanded my units forward.
Try doing that you will take some initial casualties but you should engage the entire unit as once then.

Sorry for the late reply I could grab one but it happened to me again as Reiks against Hobgoblins once again all I had to do was command the unit forward,

I've noticed its only really occurring with units in loose formation or the large "horde" sized units

You just have to double click behind the unit

It's kind of logical, although I would expect a great deal of friendly fire if they are not elves or otherwise extremely dexterous archers or only a few of them firing from behind. This is something I have never witness myself for some reason or another. This weekend I'll try to melee some archers with some swordsmen to see what happens.

Any archers will do this on walls in siege if they are in a defensive stance and its a common player exploit. I would expect the behavior is in the campaign script and is intentional.

Not only archer but units with crossbow and repeating crossbow (and repeated handgun) as well

I saw this happened if the missile units have large number (goblin archer is 250/units isn't it), have many ranks and in guard mode so most of that unit's ranks isn't force into melee so they continues to fire
