    Default gpu overheat!!

I've just upgraded my card from a radeon 9250 (ATI built), to a radeon 9550 (Connect3D built).
I used to have the proccessor over-clocked to the max, and it worked fine, my new card though, only has a passive heat sink and will not cope with the system being clocked over 100mhz! I'm toying on the idea of getting a better-built ATI-made card of the same type with a decent fan on it, as my last one coped fine. Should I do this, or is there some easy and cheap way of sorting this out by cooling the card, i'm looking to clock the proccesor back to an advantage of 600mhz btw, so there may be no way to make the card cope, but i could be wrong, anyone got any ideas?

Probably not a good idea to OC a 9550 to 600mhz!! Isn't stock someting like 250!?!

    Using passive cooling when OC'ng - also a no-no.

No, what I meant was that I was not OCing my Graphics but my proccessor, but this was affecting the card, althought the 9250 handeled it fine, the 9550 didn't.

    How is your power supply?
By introducing different video card you may now consume more power, which menas that you don't have enough joiuce to support the OC-ing.
    Just a thought...

My power supply is 450watts, do I need to change the voltage or something in BIOS do you think, or would that be dangerous? I do have a lot of accesories plugged into my pc, webcam, scanner, etc, but would this make much difference to the power consumtion? I also have 2 HDD, 2 fans and an exaughst fan so mayber you are right and I need more power, I'd try taking the fans off to test it, but I need the coolness they provide when it's OC'd! I'll see if I can find a 600watt PSU or something and test it though...

For an example of what happens:

clocked from 200fsb to 230, I play quake 4 and it stops after a few secs, goes blank, then comes back, then goes etc, untill the system just re-starts.

clocked to 266fsb, as it was with the 9250 and the pc just keeps a)restarting at windws bootup or b)gets to windows and the card doesn't work properly, (no direct draw etc), then after a while it will just restart at random.

BTW, I have just changed the card for an ATI built one, but same problem.

You still got your original card?
Did you change graphics drivers or anything else when you installed your new card?

I still have the 9250 yes, and yes I changed the drivers from 6.6 (with the 9250) to 6.7 for the new one. I couldn't use the 6.7 before, because sadly ATI don't make drivers for 9250's any more.

So you can't put the old card back in with the current software?

No, i could try, but it says 6.7 is for 9550 and above.

I'd stick it in. Worst is that it'd ask you to load the 'fully supported' driver back in.

Or you can try a roll back on your software and try your new card with the 6.6s and see if its the new drivers.

Before all this download the newest drivers from ATI website and try them again. Maybe a dodgy install of otherwise perfectly good software.

Crap, i just remembered that I also upgraded my bios etc, so that may have made a difference. I'll just have to see if step one works, if not try the older card how it used to be oc'd and if that doesn't work then that must be the problem..
