GRRM has revealed the ending of ASOIAF to HBO producers

GRRM has announced that if he dies or is overtaken by the TV show before the release of all his books (3-5 years a book for at least 2 double volumes), HBO knows his intented ending for ASOIAF.

yeah but it says in the actual interview he doesnt want anyone to finish his books. i think this is good thing but he needs to right faster

Sadly, GRRM has also previously stated that he would not allow another author to continue his work, nor use his characters/world for other books. So it is unlikely that anyone would pull a Chris Tolkein (Or what happened with Wheel of Time... A series I am not familiar with but I know was picked up by another writer).

yeah he says that in the same interview badger as in all fairness i understand where he is coming from as in 50 years no one will be watching the series but people could still be reading his books its where his legacy is

I am only referring to continuing the main storyline beyond his works. The HBO series is essentially its own creature with its own Canon (Although tied very closely to the original material)

Ouch Inarus but yes there is another statement he made about having finished the endings for the series at the start he is just connecting the dots. Tho he does need to be carefull it would be awful if he couldn't complete his life's greatest achievement

There is absolutely no 'sealed document' outlining how everything ends. Martin gave Dan Weiss and David Benioff (the TV showrunners and main writers) a very rough outline of how the rest of the story unfolds that they can choose to use to conclude the TV show if they overtake him.

HBO also do not require any kind of permission to do anything: the TV show is their creation and their contract with Martin requires them to ask him to write one episode per season. The TV show is otherwise their property and they can do what they like with it with no regard for the books (just as the books remain GRRM's property and he can do what he he likes with them with no regard for the TV show).

The title of this thread and the OP is highly misleading. They have taken some very general comments of GRRM's that were known about years ago (HBO has a brief outline of the story) and exaggerated them wildly.

if you read his interview you would realise that he keeps the ending locked away for security reasons (same reason why the harry potter books become sealed and the ending for the story was sealed.) he included his notes and all new material sealed away to be given over in the time of his death this is stated in an interview less than a MONTH ago regarding being his fans being worried he could get hit by a bus a nice way of saying he was getting old

there also will be NO OVER TAKING of the story unless GRRM dies this clearly stated in the contract as it would destroy his artist license to conclude things how he would want them it would also cost him millions as 70% of people will not read something if a close adaptation is available in film.

hbo owns the digital rights to this but they can not as you say DO AS THEY LIKE for 3 main reasons.

1. it is CLOSELY based on the books only miner differences (and before you all explain about bolton in the second season it was so it did give away the plot of the red wedding for next season.)

2. the ending has not yet been released to HBO the producers or any writing staff they have clearly stated they do not really no how it will end the only hint GRRM stated was when Ko the flood rider died it would edit the end of the story.

3. GRRM will still have a say on every aspect of filming although HBO have the rights they are still liable for any effect on his legacy and work.


now GRRm is writing one episode a season as he wants to finish his books he was OFFERED to write them all but refused as he didnt want the show catching up and having to wait 5 6 years for the remanding books.
