Cool. It took me maybe 20-30 tries to get to grips with this campaign and work out how to handle the economy, I did always play on H/H so it might not be so hard to start getting a positive return. You can spam cheap units and blitz the opening moves, take the rebels and unite southern Greece, but by the time you get to Larissa in the north the Persians will make mince meat of your armies. There's really no easy way to play it, but there are a few measures you can take. Austerity is the key.. (the irony )

    Update:
    Fast forward.......
    The year is 470BC and
as you can see on the map i have under my control all cities(Patrai,Olympia,Tegea,Sparta,Argos,Korinth,Epidaurus) of the Peloponnese peninsula except Ithome.

Captain Polyperchon and his troops besiege the city Ithome.

some info about what happened in real...
In 462BC, the Spartans were vainly

    endeavouring to reduce the mountain

stronghold of Mt. Ithome in Messenia, where a

large force of rebellious helots (state-owned

serfs) had taken refuge, they asked all their

erstwhile allies of the Persian wars,

    including the Athenians, to help.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
as you can see in pic i have under my control one part of the central and one part of the eastern greek mainland(Pherai,Pthia,Opous,Delphoi,Thebes,Athens).

I really do love the Oracle. Mak did some stellar work implementing what was a fairly random idea. I think she's still unique to total war modding (both Mak and the Oracle)..
