Yes, that's right, my general had 4 ranks of gold exp, now he has only two, how come?![]()

You can only get up to 3 gold. But anyway, it's most likely because part of the unit died and had to be regenerated. The guys being regenerated are fresh 0 exp guys, so they bring down the total experience level of the unit.
You can get negative experience points in a battle, too, Usually this happens if the unit routs, but sometimes I've seen it happen for no apparent reason to a heavy cavalry unit- check the end of battle results screen
It is to my belief that the game keeps track of the experience of every individual soldier and that a unit's experience is the average experience of all the soldiers. That is the explanation I came up with to explain the loss of experience as an experienced unit losses its experience as it is slowly destroyed in combat.
Yes, I believe that is true, but only during battle. A unit's exp is individual during the battle, but only the average exp of the unit's soldiers who are still alive affects the stats. After the battle is over, the exp of all soldiers is averaged with each other. So in other words, exp is "individual" in the sense that if some soldiers die early with less exp and get healed after battle, their lower exp is averaged in with the higher exp of the soldiers who survived.
In any case, after the casualty revivals have been calculated, the individual soldier's exp ceases to be tracked, and the exp of each soldier remaining is averaged out with each other's. That's why if you merge a gold chevron 31/60 unit with a gold chevron 30/60 unit, the 1 man unit remaining will always have the same exp as the unit's average exp.

However if from a whole unit remains just 1 soldier with gold chevron for example, retraining it will make a full unit with golden chevron, without being more expensive than retraining 1 soldier with 0 experience. Well, at least the chevrons remain on the unit card, I don't know if it's true in battle, it could be just a bug and the rest of the unit have 0 experience![]()
It couldn't be done that way mate, because the unit already regain some units after time, and I still couldn't retrain general's bodyguard.
Here is the reason why the generals bodyguard looses xp over time: its easy to get 3 gold chevrons with 8 men or less in your bodyguard, but once the bodyguard replenishes like it does each turn for a bodyguard unit the xp is divided up and thus ir gets reduced. Also its better to have more men than xp on your bodyguard, so dont get upset over it.
It should be possible to retrain the bodyguard, but only if the stables are on a high enough a tier to unlock that option.
Yes exactly what I said, I couldn't retrain 'em yet, have to develop my settlements a lot yet.
