campaign map issue

I have a problem with the game on the campaign map. I've installed Rom Total Realism 1.9 (VII) and when i'm on the campaign map and I want to move it up or down or whatever direction it moves only in tiny steps. 1 step happens in about 3 seconds so going over the map is a real pain in the *ss. When I click on the mini-map to move my camera it takes about 2 minutes for it to reload the map in that location. Same with end of turn, of AI movements, it takes 2 minutes to load the map.

I've already tried reinstalling the ATI drivers and reinstalling .net framework, but both don't seem to help. I've experienced the same with Roma Surrectum.
I'm playing RTW Gold edition on Windows XP. It's an older PC but it used to run RTW and RTR without the problem i'm now encountering.

PC specs (dxdiag may be best)?

Type of Mouse (wired/wireless etc)?

Try asking your question here. You're not the first to encounter such a problem. Campaign map trees may be a considerable part of it. I recall a player created a custom patch that uses the old vanilla trees. You'll have to ask for it, because I don't recall who it was or whether he made it available for downloading.
