Default Citizens in 15 States sign petition to secede from the union (?).

So, I was at Gamefaqs on the potd message board when I found a thread saying that 15 states were signing petitions to secede from the union since yesterday.
    Original story
As of Saturday November 10, 2012, 15 States have petitioned the Obama Administration for withdrawal from the United States of America in order to create its own government.

States following this action include: Louisiana, Texas, Montana, North Dakota, Indiana, Mississippi, Kentucky, North Carolina, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Colorado, Oregon and New York. These States have requested that the Obama Administration grant a peaceful withdrawal from the United States.

These citizen generated petitions were filed just days after the 2012 Presidential election.

Louisiana was the first State to file a petition a day after the election by a Michael E. from Slidell, Louisiana. Texas was the next State to follow by a Micah H. from Arlington, Texas.

The government allows one month from the day the petition is submitted to obtain 25,000 signatures in order for the Obama administration to consider the request.

The Texas petition reads as follows:

The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government’s neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it’s citizens’ standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.

As of 12:46 am, Sunday, signatures obtained by Louisiana, 7,358; Texas, 3,771; Florida, 636; Georgia, 475; Alabama, 834; North Carolina, 792; Kentucky, 467; Mississippi, 475; Indiana, 449; North Dakota, 162; Montana, 440; Colorado, 324; Oregon, 328; New Jersey, 301 and New York, 169. Many more States are expected to follow.

A petition is not searchable at WhiteHouse.gov until 150 signatures have been obtained. It is the originator's responsibility to obtain these signatures.

The Texas petition can be reviewed and/or signed by clicking here.
    The page at Whitehouse.gov
WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
Peacefully grant the State of Texas to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government.

The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government's neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it's citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government.
Do you guys think this is something serious or might become something serious? Maybe the start of the end? Just a joke? In a just day they got half the petitions needed, do you think people will take this as an opportunity and back this up?

This might start a movement or something, if you go here, notice all the petitions to secede!

    So, what ya think?

If you read what you posted, all you found were petitions by people living in the 15 states. Nothing was "submitted" by those states themselves.

All the problems have a small start, I think it isnt really a serious thing and kind of a joke, but what if people started some kind of movement and took this thing seriously? You know how stupid people can be when it comes to politics.

I agree, everything that has any form of impact at all on politics, and goes against the plan of the establishment, begins with grassroots activism. This secession activism seems very promising for the future of the American people.

I think Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, and New Jersey should form a superstate and tell everyone else to off.

I agree, which includes not using the tax base for their social programs.

There are petitions like this every election cycle, its nothing new and is a complete waste of time.

I took it seriously until I saw New York mentioned.

I didn't take it seriously at all, and I kept on not taking it seriously when the article contradicted itself by confusing states submitting petitions to secede, and random petitions filed by people living in those states.

Ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha! Five of these states voted for Obama if I remember the electoral map right. And now they want to succeed? Ha,ha,ha! Sure whatever try it. Idiots. Not that I think that any of this is actually serious.

    So.

You found 17,081 people who signed a petition that hasn't even been sent to congress yet (so they technically haven't even petitioned anything) out of a country of over 325 million people. Up to, and including the states that, you know, actually voted for the man they're petitioning against in these petitions in the first place?

And decided to make a thread about it because?

Because its a free country? Lol not rlly.

Well, just wanted to see the opinions from you guys about this interesting happening.

But still, all problems and wars and stuff usually start as something small and insignificant and ends up been a mess.

it would sure be nice! the federal government is way to big and out of control. its broken almost every part of its side of the contract with the states, i think secession would be a justified move on the part of the sovereign states. of course the feds would never let it happen peacefully. you know the civil war wasn't fought over slavery right? the souther states wanted to secede over tax issues.

It WAS about slavery and it was about the South throwing the biggest temper tantrums in history because Abe Lincoln was elected. That's what it really all boils down to.

get out of here with your "facts". THe south has been trying to whitewash the civil war since the day they surrendered.

We're probably better off letting some of those states go.

It takes 25k signatures for the document to be even seen by someone in the White House. It doesn't say how many signatures is the minimum for not being laughed out of court, but it probably is in the high hundreds of thousands.

I wouldn't worry about it. A bunch of rednecks drunk on moonshine and abstinence probably. Plus, even if they manage to sign more than 2/3 of the population of the state, it takes an act of the President and Congress to grant secession. A state cannot secede unilateraly, it's illegal.

    This is beyond insignificant.

It's a statistical anomaly, at best.
