US Congressional Report says Afghanisan will fall

PENTAGON — A U.S. government audit warns that Afghanistan will likely be incapable of sustaining its security forces beyond the 2014 pullout of international troops due to incompetence.

The report contains the latest in a series of warnings by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction about the country's ability to run itself when U.S. and NATO troops leave in 2014.

Released Wednesday, the report focuses on the Afghan government’s operations and maintenance capabilities, including the budgeting, purchasing, and logistics systems - which the watchdog group says are undeveloped.

The focus of the audit is the government’s administrative systems, but security analyst Gary Schmitt of the American Enterprise Institute in Washington says the deficiencies are a major threat to peace in the country after 2014.

“To be blunt, it means that people on the front lines aren’t going to be fed, paid, and or have the proper equipment to take care of the security situation and when soldiers aren’t given that, what happens is they tend to either leave post or turn their guns on the government,” Schmitt said.

Building up the Afghan forces so they can one day assume the fight against the Taliban has been a central pillar of coalition strategy.

Between 2002 and 2012, America has spent $52 billion (£32 billion) to equip, train, house, and sustain the forces, including about $12 billion alone to build bases.

Great news everyone, the SIGAR report which came out wednesday (somewhat overlooked during the celebrations of the election of the socialist President) says the Taliban are going to win after 2014. It seems the Talibs just need to wait to reconquer Afghanistan and all the new girls schools that the American taxpayer built. Afghans who collaborated with the occupation soldiers are already packing up to leave 2 years ahead of the inevitable reconquista.

So with the light at the end of the tunnel approaching what does this mean for Americans like you? Do you feel that it will still be alright with Obama guiding the good ship Liberty? What if we build a wall around Afghanistan? No one will be allowed to leave, and thus the glorious and culturally superior West will be safe from terrorist attacks. In other words, we let them fight it out, and once they have reached democracy (i.e., accepting Western superiority) and established civilization in both mind and practice, we shall remove the wall and employ them in American gas stations.

Former Liberal Democrat leader claims Afghanistan is lost

Britain should pull out its troops from Afghanistan as quickly as decently possible, former Liberal Democrat leader Lord Ashdown has said.

Writing in the Times, Lord Ashdown gave a bleak assessment of the 11-year war and said it had become crystal clear that Nato had lost in Afghanistan.

Lord Ashdown said the international community had been "divided, cacophonous, chaotic" in Afghanistan.

Some 438 British service personnel have lost their lives in the war so far.

The same report existed about Iraq. And that is a country that is significantly more advanced in these areas. And of course the same pointless threads existed about Iraq.

The best arguments against these articles or studies, of which there are many articles and studies (it is the low hanging fruit), are the few that are written by arguably the most informed of the bunch. People Francesc Vendrell, who is arguably the most respected Westerner in Afghanistan.

In a recent interview, he told me that no one can destroy some of the things built during the past 12 years, including a better health-care and education system and phenomenal growth in the urban population. "Afghans are not going to revert into the kind of system that the Taliban imposed between 1996 and 2001," he said.

Vendrell, however, said that credible elections in 2014 are a must for a peaceful future for the country.

"If those elections lack credibility, or if for whatever reason they couldn't take place, that definitely could lead to a major conflict," he said. "It will be a loss of legitimacy for the government and it will also be inevitably a bonus for the Taliban."

Dont get me wrong. Im not trying to stop with another gloat orgy thread. Afghanistan was after after all, all about the US. Nobody else fought there or put into action their own policies. We can always count on the unfettered mind of Heinz to bring us back to earth.

There are more metrics that exist to show Iraq is indeed a better place today, than under Saddam. Not to mention the metrics that show potential future growth of a country that had been stagnant for more than a decade. And certainly wasn't primed to go anywhere.

But what I was actually referring to were the posts about how every Iraqi should be dead by now and that the muj were going to physically prevent us from leaving and kill us all, as kind of like an icing on the cake.

There is no defending the pointless speculation and gloating that occurred about a situation that had not played out. And there isn't now. There are human beings that are actually going to have to make a future for themselves. Even if we pushed every Taliban and anti-government type back over into Pakistan, that would still be the case.

I may have misunderstood this, but you seem to be forgetting the rest of NATO i.e. Great Britain, France, Germany etc
