Default CIA Director David Petraeus submits letter of resignation

Yesterday afternoon, I went to the White House and asked the President to be allowed, for personal reasons, to resign from my position as D/CIA. After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours. This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation.

As I depart Langley, I want you to know that it has been the greatest of privileges to have served with you, the officers of our Nation’s Silent Service, a work force that is truly exceptional in every regard. Indeed, you did extraordinary work on a host of critical missions during my time as director, and I am deeply grateful to you for that.

Teddy Roosevelt once observed that life’s greatest gift is the opportunity to work hard at work worth doing. I will always treasure my opportunity to have done that with you and I will always regret the circumstances that brought that work with you to an end.

Thank you for your extraordinary service to our country, and best wishes for continued success in the important endeavors that lie ahead for our country and our Agency.

    With admiration and appreciation,

    David H. Petraeus

    - for a man in his position, with possibly one of the awesomest jobs around, that's just plain stupid.

So, who will replace him?, should he have resigned over this? it seems like he was a pretty capable guy, the press didn't seem to be aware of it so a media scandal was probably not likely imo.

Anyone think there could be another reason behind resignation? (I don't personally)
Why does anyone make an internets clan? There is no material advantage to it. We get no money from it, no resources, nothing tangible at all. Perhaps it is a longing for identity, a sense of belonging, and shared values, the very things that have been destroyed by the scourge of liberal-capitalist individualism. Perhaps we all secretly desire to pwn peoples' faces and flame them afterwards. Perhaps a trollface.jpg lurks within all our hearts. Perhaps it is all of those things. It is possible to perceive similarities between the growth of clans and the post-war rise in football fan clubs, new age cults, and religious fundamentalism. As our leaders neglected collectivist concepts like "the nation" and encouraged capitalist individualism and atomistic self-interest, we looked to other forms of collective identity to fill the void. And that, perhaps, is what the TW community really is. A haven of camaraderie and collectivism in a self-interested, materialist and individualistic world.

One question: Was the extra-marital affair with a woman, man or boy? You never know in America anymore.
Once a political decision has been reached to proceed with internal disturbances in Syria, CIA is prepared, and SIS (MI6) will attempt to mount minor sabotage and coup de main [sic] incidents within Syria, working through contacts with individuals. Incidents should not be concentrated in Damascus. [A] necessary degree of fear, [...] frontier incidents and [staged] border clashes [will] provide a pretext for intervention. The CIA and SIS should use [...] capabilities in both psychological and action fields to augment tension. [Funding should be provided for a] Free Syria Committee [and arms should be supplied to] political factions with paramilitary or other actionist capabilities.

Little known fact, if he gets divorced, his wife gets half of his Army pension and retains all benefits. Which for a 4 Star General, is a ton.

Source: My dumb ing father-in-law divorcing his hateful, fat, German wife of 13 years less than 6 months after retiring from the Army.

    Stupid.

Would be even worse if it ended in divorce.

Evolution has programmed him to do it. It takes a strong person not to when given so much opportunity.

Not if everyone including his wife and employers already knew what he did?

A pic of the woman in question would make this thread a lot better. That's a shame either way. He was my CG in the 101st. Very intelligent guy and knew how to deliver some inspirational words when needed.

Must be more to this. Either this is a cover, or this information was about to come out publicly anyways.

Just a week before the hearing on Benghazi...

Could be a coincidence, or not.

Or.... And I know this sounds crazy, but perhaps the man is just truly honourable and has decided that actions such as extramarital affairs are not befitting the office of Director of the CIA. He may also wish to focus on his family and repair things there; something which is probably a bit hard to do while in such a job. It's also possible that the other person may also be a serving CIA officer, so he's resigning to prove to his wife that it is over.

But no, let's stick with the comspiracy theories that he's been forced out and this is all some conspiracy to do with Benghazi. That's much more sensible.

Sure, the head of an organization doing various dirty stuff actually find it is dishonorable to have an an affair.

Lol, that headline would be hilarious.

The astranged wife of former CIA head David Patreous was found dead in northern Pakistan today. Officials are unsure how or why she was there.
