Default Iranian Jets Fires on unmaned predator Drone in the Persian Gulf

    CNN http://security.blogs.cnn.com/2012/1...one/?sr=fbmain

Two Iranian Su-25 fighter jets fired on an unarmed U.S. Air Force Predator drone in the Persian Gulf last week, CNN has learned.
The incident raises fresh concerns within the Obama administration about Iranian military aggression in crucial Gulf oil shipping lanes.
The drone was in international airspace east of Kuwait, U.S. officials said, adding it was engaged in routine maritime surveillance.
Although the drone was not hit, the Pentagon is concerned.
Two U.S. officials explained the jets were part of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps force, which has been more confrontational than regular Iranian military forces.
The Obama administration did not disclose the incident, which occurred just days before the presidential election on November 1, but three senior officials confirmed the details to CNN.
And they failed to hit it, wow, way to screw up an international inncident Iran.

So what do you guys think? I doubt anything will come from it. Tensions will rise, but neither side will commit to going to war over it. We might take a pot shot at something of theirs but that's it.

Fox News I'm sure is just going to jump aaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllll over this.

Perhaps they weren't actually trying to hit it? Ever heard of a warning shot? I'm pretty sure even the Iranians could have shot it down if they'd really wanted to.

The more important question is what the hell were they hoping to achieve by this.

Yes it talks about that latter in the article. I am of course simply going to ridicule them for missing even if they were (most likely) just doing warning shots .

It's just a way to let the world know their still there, they don't want wwar, but they're playing the game where they have to make it look like they are. However actually opening fire on something....yeah probably not the best thing to do.

Wow really? That's totally mind blowing. I never would have guessed...............
It's called sarcasm buddy. The fact that they fired their onboard guns rather than missilies means that they were most likely just messing with the U.S.

Well, then it's a pretty bad and pointless one. Go on.

I trust these three officials will eventually be named and the video will be released to the public in proper transparent fashion.
Once a political decision has been reached to proceed with internal disturbances in Syria, CIA is prepared, and SIS (MI6) will attempt to mount minor sabotage and coup de main [sic] incidents within Syria, working through contacts with individuals. Incidents should not be concentrated in Damascus. [A] necessary degree of fear, [...] frontier incidents and [staged] border clashes [will] provide a pretext for intervention. The CIA and SIS should use [...] capabilities in both psychological and action fields to augment tension. [Funding should be provided for a] Free Syria Committee [and arms should be supplied to] political factions with paramilitary or other actionist capabilities.

I need to go watch Fox News and see if they connect the dots between the news only being released after election day and go off on a rant of how it's a conspiracy or something.

All of your allies join, but so do all of theirs. You goofed by not declaring war on some weak nation allied only to iran.

This what you gets when Iran educates its pilots about drones with Robocop videos.

Basically Iran is being the ignored child jumping up and down shouting "look at me!", because everyone's been paying attention to the US election.

Interesting. I'm curious as to the capability of our drones to strike Iranian aircraft. Are there any military experts or those with the appropriate knowledge who could indulge me? Although a military confrontation and loss of human life is undesirable, Iran would not be wise to contend with the most powerful military on Earth.

This part made the matter a bit less surprising to me. And also less worrisome, as I would hope elements within Iran's standard military understand the implications of a conflict with the United States. Those implications would not bode well were Iran's leadership to be so foolish.

I think the Predator can be equipped with air-to-air missiles. Not sure though. I don't think it would be particularly effective anyways.

Actually I would imagine the Republican Guard commanders are have more interest in avoiding a war with the U.S. as they have several economic interests invested.
