I'm not exactly sure what you mean. The regular Horon shield from htw is still the soldier's shield (unfinished UV)
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

That shield is for a new knight unit for Horon, hence the knightly shape. The texture IS wood, it's just white wood. Do you mean you'd rather it be a brown wood or something? Also everything that's not white wood is supposed to be metal, I plan on making the symbology stand out with meshing. Does it just not look like wood or metal? lol I figured they had a way of dyeing/bleaching the wood white, because the original shield texture looked as if it was supposed to be white wood to me.

Ah, what I meat was something a bit more curvy compared to the other knights shields, something like this shape

I know the design you showed is wood, I was just thinking of a way to better texture it. At the moment the paint layer is a bit too clean / flat considering you can still see the wood grain underneath which makes it look a bit unnatural (at leatst to me, that could probably be alleviated by making the paint thicker and more textured to the point where the grain is less visible, with the clean wood layer being shown on the side with the handle. Alternatively you could add a weathered effect to the paint / wood to make it more textured. The metal looks good though

    I like the curved idea.

With the wood, you have to consider that they live on a completely different planet than earth. The same rules don't apply such as: they may not colorize wood the same way we have historically. They could have a stain or dyeing technique that allows for a clean white grainy wood look. They may even use magic to pull the color of the wood out. OR they may simply have trees with nice white wood (we have some that come very close).

Remember that they live under the watch of a giant sentient tree and they worship nature, and this is Zelda so making things look just a bit unnatural is OK in my book. It was never meant by me to be painted wood.

With that being said, would you still recommend I change the texture? I appreciate the feedback!

Yeah, I get where you are coming from, Still though I feel like adding a bit more depth would be beneficial. Maybe. I am not saying it looks bad by the way, just suggesting a different way of doing it
Ultimately its the creators choice, and you seem to be good at what you do, so I trust you

p.s No problem, its nice to just be interacting with the community here, rather than watching from the background (which is what I had been doing for the previous year )

It wouldn't be difficult to add another overlay to try that out, I'll do so and see how it compares.

Although it can be difficult to take criticism at times, I know you weren't dissing my work.

I definitely understand what you mean though, nearly all of my (now 35) posts are from the past week or so and are mostly in this thread. After years of just being a forum lurker, it's nice to actually be a part of things and connect to people with similar interests. lol

For the (3 Variations of a "New" Non-military issue Hylian shield.)
I say the 3rd one is the best for representing the common folk.
And the 2nd would be good for a slightly better off person. Like a Trader of goods. Or a village/town representative/leader.
But that's assuming the culture and economics are closer to Medieval time/Mount and Blade.

Would the first look better with gold symbology? I feel as though the third seems a bit too expensive with the gold trim/reinforcements to be owned by most commoners. (Although gold could possibly more common than steel in Hyrule?) I plan on having a variety of wooden hylian shields for the poor farmers and peasantry. I agree about the second, though.

If you or anyone else has the extra time, it'd really help to have a collection of symbols affiliated with the goddesses and specific factions/groups. Any variation from any source (even good non-canon) would be awesome. It might even help Neph to have such a thing.

This is the closest thing I've found, and it doesn't seem very exhaustive.

    Edit:
My sig banner is killing me, where are size specifications? No matter how I edit it, it's cut off somehow.

I just made my own by cutting off the part from one of Neph's pics. And then Editing it with paint before putting it in. I don't know of any other way. :/

The first one is to much of one color. It's all shades of grey in other words. And I don't think it looks good. :/

What? I used the dimensions of your sig for my current one and it's cut off at the bottom.

That's not really constructive criticism, I asked how I could improve it. Maybe add a bit of small blue details? Or what? To be fair, the main aspect is black.

Honestly that one was my favorite, the other's are too gaudy to me. I'm more of a LOTR kind of person than a Warhammer type. I prefer subtlety. I also prefer silver over gold. So if that's not your preference, I'd rather you make your words reflect that a bit more. Saying you don't think it looks good is different than it not fitting your taste. So is it just taste? Or does the tex actually look bad in your opinion?

That said, the third is only 2 colours really, and the second is only really 3. There are more one tone shields in existence than anything else historically speaking. It's a shield, not an accessory.

Other than that, is the metal texture too scratchy?

Edit: Does this look better Dragon, or nah? I haven't touched the mesh yet, just worked on the tex based on your suggestions. Ignore the difference in metal, that's because the new one doesn't have a spec map yet.

What I didn't like about the first one Hyrulain shield. Was that it looked like an old Black and White photo. Maybe a small tint of color may change that. Or maybe changing the symbol at the center to gold/brass. Like you suggested. May do the trick.

That actually looks a lot better
It keeps the 'mystical feel' while looking a lot more natural to the eye, Good Job.

With the first shield that is being discussed at the moment, I think a rough red / blue pattern that looks like it has been hastily painted would help break it up, while still keeping the overall practical theme,
    hope this helps

Thanks a lot, I was getting a bit discouraged.

and yeah, I'll take that in mind while making more variations. I like variety so as long as things are of a certain quality I can include them. Either way you can't please everyone and I like the first one, it's not going to be assigned to any troop anyway. Just for sale at your local items shop. Everyone can just ignore it like they do Tingle anyway lol

Not bad, I've joined the HTW team so things are slowed down a bit. The good news is that the majority of what I do for HTW overlaps with this project.

    I'll just dump some previews here, this is only what's presentable so far and I have a lot more done than I can show as of yet;

The HD Re-textures are looking good! Keep your good work going (with M&B and helping with Hyrule:TW[including everyone else who is helping with this enormous task])!

Thanks a lot guys, the Majora stuff is what I'm working on for HTW. Not sure if it'll go in, Neph hasn't really given the go-ahead for any unofficial art as far as I know. My versions would just be a placeholder for Neph's work since the current Majora versions of a lot of factions are still based on the old models, and he doesn't have a whole lot of time on his hands.

Basically my Majora Converts are in a similar situation to Overmind5000's Tarm work. Speaking of which, I haven't really asked to use Overmind's work in Warband yet, but I'm hoping to.

UN may actually already have some Majora versions made, but has yet to release. I was told that his patreon exclusive Zelda var. has Ironclads but unfortunately I'm unable to give the support needed for that, so I haven't seen them. In any case I just started with what I already had HD versions of. I plan on doing them for every faction that needs them.

Anyway, it'll be in Zelda's Warband either way. More to come soon, and hopefully an in-game preview of Hylian Church of Majora vs The Kingdom of Hyrule.
