Why is the comment section of Yahoo News articles a cesspool?

I feel that every time I read any article on Yahoo News (political or otherwise) the comments that are left are the most childish, mean spirited, and sometimes downright hateful. Even stories that have nothing to do with politics are never spared. I'm used to Youtube comments being stupid but you usually have to actively look for a political video.

Should I just use gmail from now on?
