    Default ai using samurai armies

i've noticed that the ai has only been using full stacks of samurai warriors and its getting really annoying because that makes recruiting ashigaru practically pointless, so can someone help me here?

first full stack of cannons, now full stack of samurai warriors. Only 1 type units? Then it is better build an army, who can beat them easily.

well if you have the money (like the AI often does), why wouldnt you recruit the better warriors? makes sense

Its been like that in all TW's. the advanced troops beat the starters. Line infantry beats levy's in FotS, line infantry beats militia in ETW/NTW. And Urban cohort defeats hastati in rome

Ashigaru is never pointless, Yari ashigaru makes excellent flank/rear protectors vs AI cavalry.

Properly upgraded in blacksmith provinces you can get some rather sick Yari ashigaru. (seen yari ashi's with 19 melee attack).

Yari Ashigaru is always viable (remember to upgrade!) because of their high numbers and spear wall ability.
Bow Ashigaru is viable because of their high numbers.

They arent as strong stat wise as upgraded samurai units, but unless you use ai improving mods you'll never see them use those anyway. Besides tactics trumphs all

for the piccie below remove 1 armor and 2 charge. The melee bonus they receive is the same as a upgraded weaponsmith + jiujutsu dojo (+6), then add experience bonuses and you get the piccie below.

Best part? They cost 70~koku upkeep, thats nearly half the price of the cheaper samurai units.

    yari samurai comparison:

nearly twice as expensive, 40 less men, not that much better stats

Thumb rule: Units never become absolute in shogun 2.

Someone with modding skills should really do a flexible unit cap mod. The number of samurai units you can have would increase with the development of the according building, for example the first level of a sword dojo allows you to have two katana samurais and the next level two more. I know that this kind of thing has been achieved in the Sekigahara mod, but I would love to see this for the vanilla campaign as well.

On that topic: There's plenty of AI mods (and other mod types that include AI changes) that changes the army setup the AI prefer to recruit and maintain.
Makes it more fun rather than seeing umpteenth bow sams armies all the time.

Wonder if i can make a wacky AI personality which spams fire rocket troops mmm :x (fun unit btw )
