Default How many people have tried playing the OOTMM?

I have tried them a few weeks ago and just finished but the MOS has come out and ive got to say.. challenging... but.... some of the most fun ive had. Big numbers, wealth OMG, great defensive position. As long as you dont spread yourself too far, it is possible to win, even if you have to make a temp ceasefire.

So has anybody tried this faction and in general do you at least try to vary who you play or do you stick to a fave few?

OotMM was the first faction I played... and I lost a few times on VH/VH before learning the game on lower difficulty and easier factions. I actually won one time with OotMM on basic 3.2TATW no mods on VH/VH, but the Dwarves helped me a bit by infighting with the good factions. It's really important to knock down Rivendell early in the game.

I enjoy OotMM in their flavor and starting position, but they really need 1-2 more unit types. And perhaps 1-2 AOR units would make them more interesting as well. I would say they need another fast unit to fight elves and avoid getting kited (it's really miserable to chase elf archers all over the map for 20 minutes) and perhaps 1 more axe unit (or other armor pierce) to contend with Dwarves (equivalent to Fellers or Maulers of Gundabad/Mordor respectively).

I did. It's a faction I find it was very hard to rush with so I had to turtle most of the time, except for Imladris. Took that one right away to have some peace with the High Elves right away.

I dont play orc factions, because of the little amount of unit diversity and strategy involved in the battles.

Ahhhh, the Orcs of the Misty Mountains....that brings back some memories.
    Hellish memories xD

But in all seriousness, I believe they are the hardest faction to play as, but also at least the 3rd most fun. You are a horde, no questions about it. The Balrog will become a little useless when you're conquering, but just seeing the sheer numbers of goblins overrun a town or city, and eventually all of Middle Earth from one big mountain range smack dab in the middle of it all is...satisfying

Its hard to beat the level of accomplishment you feel after winning a game with OotMM.

Agree 100%! Filthy monkeys slaughtering more civilized peoples, feels great!

I very much enjoy the horde-feeling of OotMM as well myself, but I agree that they could use a few more specialized units, and same with the Orcs of Gundabad.

Tried them once with a co-op hotseat campaign with my roomate. However, we were playing FROME or whatever and the blue dwarves were too much for us. They steam rolled us and we literally had nothing to fend them off with, FROME was odd, the blue dwarves were highly overpowered. I steam rolled everyone with them in a VH/VH campaign, going to war with everyone around me too, elves, men, orcs.. doesnt matter, they just had money pooring in.... As far as Vanilla TATW... no.. I never tried them but I feel they will rely on wargs and trolls.

I spamming Warg Rider as much as I can afford

unstoppable horde of Warg steam rolling
Its easy to make war with others, its never been easy when we need a peace.

In the middle of an OotMM campaign (VH/VH) right now and have about 32 regions controlled (Harad has 24, Mordor 21, and no one else above 15).

Moria is darned near impregnable as long as you don't auto-resolve.

I find there is plenty of unit diversity once you get upper level barracks ... but not sure that they are able to recruit olog-hai trolls which is a bit of a bummer so far.

Balrog rocks ... its slow as crap movement makes him a very difficult general to use to expand, but you basically just need one guy named Moe carrying a spear along with him to take down a huge army. I was able to dramatically improve the Balrog's usefulness by slapping on him every movement enhancing retainer I could find. It's still slow but now at about the speed of artillery.

a lot of fun to play with ...

Well, they have the smallest roster, check the Palantir Unit Guide. I think its only 9 units plus generals. There are 2 big problems compared to other orc factions. They only have 1 axeman (Goblin Halberd) while the other orcs get 2 axemen (Fellers and Maulers plus Halberds) which means OotMM have less armor piercing capability than the other orcs... and their main enemy is the Dwarves. The other big problem is they only have 1 troll species while other troll users get 2, which just means less trolls overall in your armies.

Now what do OotMM get to make up for this disadvantage? Well they get 1 higher tier archer than Gundabad... but I don't know ANYONE who really likes goblin archers. I suppose against the Silvans sometimes you have no choice, but a Goblin Tier 3 archer is still worse than a basic Tier 1 Silvan by a LOT. I agree elves should be better but its comparing 5 damage to 8...

But yeah, the Balrog is awesome

There has been some talk about upgrading their roster, and giving them a visual overhaul. Its a long time since I have heard anything about it though, but Im hoping something gets done, they seem to get overlooked when people make new stuff for the mod. I believe the only things that have been done with them since tatw 1.0 is the addition of wargriders and the balrog.

Still a great and challenging faction to play

I've said for years now that the best upgrade any faction in TATW can get is giving OOtMM independent warg units. ala warhounds in Rome. (Now they can even be modeled on the new wargs in The Hobbit)

This would solve some of the problems the goblins are having.

We can hope official TATW goes with something like that at least.
In DCI: Last Alliance we will use wolves* for OotMM (and White Wolves for Hillmen of the North who take OoG's place, if allied with OotMM and Mordor) since it's a natural and good improvement for the faction(s).

I thinkthey deserve mountain trolls, or at least in certain regions, like northern settlements. Since they've been battling the dwarves historically, you would imagine some more armor piercing units like some axemen or something....

But I have hope, the Hobbit will definately help out next upgrade

    I want WARGGG !!!!

    I don't care wolves

ah they have been with goblin for a long time, why would they use wolves anyway?

unless you talking about big wolves one

I saw the thread title in the list without really opening to read the thread and that made me shelf my High Elf campaign that became quite boring after I killed Sauron. (When Sauron appeared diplomacy with the evil factions went to and killing him didn't change anything.)

So now I'm the brown death in the middle and I just finished my fist Invasion in TATW. Edoras is hell to conquer!

I just found TATW a few weeks ago, so just now I'm taking each faction at a time. I probably will go back to that HE campaign and finish it after I finish this one. I really like it now that the bloody silvans are dead. For some reason OotMM's economy is pretty alright, in numbers it's not impressive, but somehow they manage to turn a profit anyhow.
    So far I've played:
    Gondor
    Rohan
    Orcs of Gundabad
    High Elves
and now Orcs of the Misty Mountains
    In that order.
Of those I think I'm liking OotMM best and OoG the least. HE second Gondor in the middle and Rohan hardly doing better than OoG...hmm perhaps those two should swap places?
Two factions I'll probably leave to the last because I don't like them for in game reasons. The Silvans because of their tree-hugging appearance, as in hippie hallucination induced colours, those forest wardens are not blending in to any forest, unless you have taken something that was popular in the 60-ies.
Worse are Eriador, now that I've faced their stuff with several factions I KNOW their rooster is broken. Someone has tinkered with their stats ingame, but forgotten to change them back. Those peasant archers are at least as good as the HE Eldar archers except for range. Other troops are also vastly outperforming their supposed ingame stats.

I'm playing OOTMM and finding them quite interesting... their skirmishers are great, and the only real treat for you isn actually the Sylvans... ok maybe the Dwarves are a little bit hard to face, but not so much...but I have a question about the Balrog: Moria is a huge city, I've built mithril mines (ended on turn 91), but the damn demon didn't appear... did I make some mistakes?

theres a 10% chance that the balrog will appear for you every turn after turn 80, or something like that. just keep playing and, hopefully, you'll get them eventually XD
