Default Very Basic Battlefield Control Questions

Played the mod a lot back in the spring but took a long break. I recall the capacity to form up units into numbered groups, assign formations, etc. but in my first fire-up to start refamiliarizing myself I don't see how to do this.

Guess maybe I should fire up vanilla and go through the tutorial again?

If anyone has a link to a basic "how to control your units" page or a youtube video much appreciated.

This one seems pretty helpful. Will have to try that stuff tomorrow when I'm not sleepy

I don't know about anybody else, but I create my own set up for each battle and group my own units. I have little confidence that someone else is better at it than me. Hahahaha!

If you are the Romans in the Republic pre Marian era the bottom left corner formation is sound. My army composition is 8 chohorts 4 triarii 2 equites 4 velites and 1 general. If you select the formation mentioned they will put two checker board lines of the 8 cohorts with the 4 triarii in a long unbroken line far to the rear of all units. The velites will be in front of the cohorts with the General behind the second line of cohorts and 1 equite on each flank. This is an acceptable and fairly accurate formation for the Romans. The Triarii so far back alows you to never be caught from behind without the enemy being sandwiched by your reserves veterans.

However at times its nice to hold velites in reserve so they can await the moment all ememies are engaged and then flank and unload their javelins.. Romans should never have more then three cav if you want to stay reasonably historical. It creates a nice puzzle to show your tactical flexibility how you deal with different army compositions with a standard Roman army.

And make sure you put the game on H/H or it will be way to easy. Hard battle makes for some good challenges. Watch out for the Boi in the forrest around the Alps during winter. You might get beat!

Here's the manual for Rome Total War. It should have basic commands in there.
