    Default Graphics Card Help/Suggestions

    Hey everyone,

I know that there are many threads about graphics cards down here, but I figured I wouldn't hijack a thread with my own personal inquiry. Anyhow, I happened to be browsing around when I came across this card:
    HD 7950 3GB

Now, I have an HD 6950 1GB right now. My question is: Should I pick this up for Christmas, or should I wait until next year and see what deals are going on with the models that come out then? I guess I should also write that I have an i7 920 @ 3.60, just in case there may be a bottleneck issue with getting the card. I can play games right now on high settings, but I want that extra push. I don't know if it is worth upgrading right now, that is why I would like some help and/or suggestions.

Thank you in advance for all help and responses.

Wait till after Christmas, the next series from Nvidia and AMD has been rumored to be released in Q1 2013. I think it will be worth the wait, particularly with Rome 2 in mind.

I'd wait, your current card is good already, so a few more months shouldn't hurt.

Never upgrade to the following years series from your current card if its something that powerful, just a waste of money.

Ok since my inquiry is in a similar vein here I go...

My parent recently purchased a pc (Lenovo, I3-2120, windows 8, 8gb ram, 1tb hard drive) while I was away at uni and I want to buy a graphics card the could run Empire/Napoleon on Ultra (Unit size) and maybe even Shogun. The current card is intergrated so its an epic fail.

I have used the 9800 gt on my old pc but it is broken now and feel i could get a better one.

My budget is about 50 quid possibly a bit more but don't really want to go over. Any suggestions?

50 quid wont get you a card that runs Napoleon on ultra.

Just done some research and I realize that now. Ah sweet technological ignorance.

I'm going to go for a GTX 460 I think

As an owner of a GTX 460 I can tell you that it is a good card, it runs well, stays relatively cool and is (at least for me) reliable. Despite the card getting somewhat old compared to whats out there it will still run BF3 on medium/high depending on the rest of your setup, including Napoleon and Empire, etc.

Well my old 9800 GT could run Empire well with 400 men a unit and this card is apparently far better so it should be nice.

Be careful when adding a graphics card to a pre-built system. The problem with pre-builts is that they have lower spec PSU's (especially Lenovo) and you have to be sure you're not over-taxing the power supply or you could have some bad things happen to that system. Do you have any idea what your PSU is rated at? Now this is just an overabundance of caution but it might be a good idea to know beforehand. Good luck!

I have no idea at the moment as I am miles away from home. I will have a good look when I get home. Thing is this system has an intergrated graphics card of which the salesman told my not so tech savvy dad it was great for media and that was him convinced. So whether or not I can actually put a new GPU in around the intergrated one is another story, if at all possible.

Why would you buy a 460 out of interest? I can't find one for less than £120?

Honestly though I would be watching your power supply and motherboard for compatibility/power... Integrated graphics generally means the cpu's on-board graphics so that should not be a problem.

Recently upgraded from a sturdy but long obsolete 4850 to a GTX670. It runs games like a knife through hot, steamy butter.
