    “Space Horde”
    by Nick Thomadis

I had a vision of a simple space movie. So I fixed the soundtrack for it. I mastered the tracks and uploaded them so you can all hear what I call “Dark Music”. A new kind of music which may find some supporters around the world.

This music is not the typical you may have heard. It is quite unique and many will find it terrifying and rather uneasy to fit in a median music ear. But this is the catch. Since it uses techniques of sounds similar to ambient, accompanies rhythm and has a peak of soundtrack theme…it may fit to be used for many occasions except relaxing!
The sounds fill and magnetize your mind providing a strange fill of stress and rhythm.

This particular pack of music is only for soundtack reasons and was produced visualizing the movie I had in my mind before 2 summers.
    In short…

”Future Earth is attacked by a major alien race searching for civilizations to consume and enslave. The humans named them Guardians as they were ancient in birth and it was said that they have enslaved and guarded a large proportion of the known galaxy. Their real name was not known as their language and appearance was unknown. The invasion was supported by the imperial super battle cruiser and the Emperor of the Guardians. In a matter of days, the human civilization and Earth is subjugated and only a small proportion of the population manages to escape in another planetary system hoping to return and revenge for their decisive defeat.
The hope is found in a system where a friendly alien race is encountered, knowing about the strength of the Guardians and deciding to help them, reveal them of the secret weapon of theirs. In a system called Krontor ,where a rare mineral resource is found, the “Elarion”, it is constructed a super vessel that is 100% constructed from this resource. It is the most light and resistant material in the universe and the starship is able to travel in magnificent speeds. Naming it “Frigate Thanatos” they prepare to launch it to space and together with the Remnant Human fleet, prepare their counter attack….But the Guardians have found them…..
No more to say, hear it and tell me if you visualize the movie!

This is free music provided, developed and created fully by me and decided to make it available mostly to thank my TWcenter forum fans for their support and appreciation for my modding efforts.
Also it has the basic synthesis of what I now call "Dark Music" maybe a new kind of music I might say.
Although I produce and have produced many other more commercial type songs, this is a special liking of mine.

    Tks!
Well if we think specifically all the styles of available music in names are countless....
If we think generally the genres are not too many.
So specifically thinking I believe it could be (in many not all) a new genre (Dark Music= soundtack + ambient + rythm +slow progressivity +..darkness)

Well, it's not really the music that I personally find enjoyable. I'll throw that out there from the start. However, I don't see it as being as 'dark' as you claim. Granted, the chords and sounds are pretty morbid, but in all seriousness, the 'techy' noises have a tendency to eliminate any feeling of dread that you were trying to exude (wonderful word).

The main problem I have is the over-emphasis on the bass line and the percussion. It makes it sound quite a bit like techno, rather than what I think you were trying to accomplish. The ambient sounds in the first track are well-imposed, but after that they tend to fall short.

    :hmmm:

    Tks for the feedback.

Yes, you maybe are right for the majority since not all tracks are of the same genre after all and also all of them are meant to be a soundtrack with a similar theme of a speculative movie.

But it is a sample of songs that represent the Dark theme and since I have produced many like this, (not heard by others yet) I know that the style is there..sometimes difficult to distinquish.

What I wanted mostly was to visualize the speculative scenario I had in my mind ....for a game/hobby.
I think I have accomplished that.

For quite a few of the tracks, especially Battle in the Asteroid Belt, I actually had quite a bit of trouble with the visualization aspect. Since that was your main purpose in this, I made it a personal point to work with the visualization.

One thing that the music DOES have is consistency. Each of the tracks, while certainly varying in content, all carry the same theme. That much is to be applauded. Unfortunately, I personally don't feel that it was the theme that you were looking for. Frigate Thanatos I felt was probably the strongest until about two minutes in, when the percussion entered in again.

Actually, after glossing over the tracks again, they are all very thematic, eerie, and dark until that stupid beat comes in. In all honesty, that is what changes the entire feel of each of these tracks. It's not even the fact that you want percussion in there. It's the rapid-fire nature of the percussion, along with the virtual lack of any melodic line.

I think that the idea behind the music is excellent, as I just began composition of a similar piece (though not THAT similar), but the execution is marred by a possible inexperience (which makes sense, as it's a new genre), or confusion with what images certain music creates.

For example, I am beginning the composition of a 'Nightmare' Symphony. It's supposed to traverse a young child being put to bed by his mother, and then his dreams morph into the images that frequent one's concept of a nightmare. Now, in order to do this, I'm going to be studying a number of different sources, including horror movies and some science fiction movies. Certain instruments produce certain feelings. Your ambient noises are good at producing that tension and anxiety that you are trying to create. However, the supporting bass and percussion lines produce the images of a rave party.

By the way, when you say you produced this, explain to me exactly what that means. Did you write it, somebody else wrote it and you formatted it, or what? I'm relatively unfamiliar with this style of music (the genre, not soundtracks).

"Battle in the asteroid field" is visualizing a space battle in a theater of battle near ...an asteroid belt. It produces a lot of tension and speed.

It is meant to have this percussion since if you get your self to think that you are in a space craft and listen in the same time ..you feel the speed and the rapid change of environment. In some tracks.

Certainly I produce with no percussion themes also (In dark music style) but the soundtrack had to do with tension so it was vital.

For example I believe that you have liked the "Prepare to Launch" with the break beat percussion style, ambience, techno and bass lines.

Indeed the rythm was intented bcs this is the quite different in the genre I want to introduce.
If the rythm was not there we could say that this would be mostly an ambient style of music.

The concept you are thinking is interesting and this may help you

The only problem that I'm recognizing is there isn't, in fact, an increase of tension that is very noticeable. The no-percussion themes are your best because the type of percussion that you chose isn't the tension-building type.

So what if it's ambiance music? If it serves the purpose, then it's fine. Don't get so caught up in creating a new genre that you neglect certain aspects of writing music just to be different. For your percussion, and ideas of increasing tension, you need to look at very successful examples. For example, listen to the soundracks from the Aliens series. Or listen to Bela Bartok, if you want something a little more bizarre. Or Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet (the part where she dies, sorry for any spoilers lol)

Again, being perfectly honest, if you introduced a beat that wasn't so dependent on a single percussion set, your music would sound ten times better. Try experimenting with different instruments, like high strings, brass, electric guitars, etc. Instruments capable of creating that eerie sound. Good luck either way.

Private clients ask me to help them out with compositions. I help them, and then get compensation for my time and effort. I also give lessons in Violin and Viola, if you're interested. Oh, and if you need a string quartet at a wedding, or fancy party, or first communion or whatever, feel free to contact me as well.

And to think, I'm not considered a 'professional' yet...such is the life of a musician

Have updated the version with better mastering normalized edition. Smoother and louder frequencies give better quality of sound. Those who have downloaded..redownload.

I gave it a shot. Not my cup of tea but it's a cool effort, respect :-)

    Thought of two things:
    - playing Unreal Tournament. I somehow think it would be a fitting soundtrack for UT.
    - At one point: Jetone (Canadian ambient techno artist). One of my few explorations in that particular field of music. One of the few I can enjoy. Sometimes. It's not quite similar to yours, but anyways... Might be inspiring too if you get tired of Bela Bartok and prokofiev :-)
